I own a 98 mountaineer AWD . I have a grinding noise from the drivers side front wheel that starts at 35mph and gets louder as I accelerate .I have been told 3 different things by ( DEALERSHIP) mechanics one says it is the brakes another says wheel bearings and the last said the axle shaft . The noise is more of a rubbing than a gear grinding. ( V-8 Engine ,AWD ,Automatic transmission)

A simple brake inspection would reveal any problems there. I would guess the bearing is bad if the noise changes pitch when you turn.

Dealer checked and said bearings were fine and axle was good too .
Heard through grape vine that the brake dust cover or the brake not releasing fully could cause it. been back to dealer twice once to check dust cover and once to check brakes both fine. I think it is the axle or the bearings will replace both and hope for the best.
