93 Grand Am code 43 please help

Hello,
I'm working on a 93 Grand Am with a 2.3 SINGLE ohc. I am getting DTC 43 which reads electronic spark control sensor or module problem. The only sensor that effects the spark control is the knock sensor. Well since the spark control is handled by the computer I tried the knock sensor first. Replacing it did not help. I am still getting the SES light.

I viewed that data stream while the car was running and 2 things grabbed my attention: 1. The data stream shows quad drivers 1,3,and 4 are bad but there is no trouble code being set by the quad drivers themselves. 2. The spark advance jumps back and forth between 8 and about 20 at idle. I thought this usually stayed pretty steady at idle? :screwy: When you rev it up to about a steady 3,000 rpm it holds about 30 degrees of spark advance.

Anyone have any advice???? I am starting to think it's the computer, but i don't want to risk messing up a new one if it is something else. By the way, I checked the wiring going to the knock sensor and it is good.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Ryan

Welcome to AF.

DTC 43 Knock Sensor(KS) Circuit - spark control
Did you check the wiring from the sensor to the ECU?

How many miles are on your engine?

Also sounds like your timing chain(TC) is loose causing time to fluctuate, or it could just be the timing chain tensioner inside the TC cover.

Btw a Quad driver is not any one thing.
Iit is many parts of the car sending signals to the ecu/pcm,
if the signal isnt present when it should be then it throws a Quad driver DTC, ususally.

A signal bulb, loose wires, several things could cause a quad driver code but you didnt mention one.

You did clear the code after you replaced the Knock sensor?
that'll probly need done before the ses light goes out.

hope that helps.
