I was going to replace the cams on my sr20det s14. I was choosing between hks, crowler, JWT. Just the stage ones because not replacing the valve springs yet. But I keep hearing about VCT. Will I have a problem with this and if I will is it worth it? I would like to get around 400hp when all is said and done. Thanks in advance!

if you really want 400 hp, your not gonna do it with stage 1 cams. and why even do anything unless your gonna go all the way. get some springs, retainers, valves, a valve job, and some cams that are better than the weak ones you listed.

what? shut up. you don't need a built head to make 400.

VTC is fine until you really wrap the motor up or get into super high lift cams.

Tomei 256s or HKS 264 Step 1s will be fine for 400hp on a 2871.

if you're building the bottom end get a bigger and better head to take advantage of a higher redline.

no you dont need a built head for 400hp. but it does help relieve some stress on the engine. the better the turbo can flow, the less work it actually has to do pumping air into your engine. you can get 400 hp with only a big turbo and a boost controller, but you will be running much higher boost than on a 400 hp SR20 with a nicely built head.
