latley i have noticed a ticking sound while i accelerate ,I am thinking this might be a lifter problem or somthing of that nature .Is this common for these cars to have this happen .is there such thing as a lifter overhul or replacement ?.

Not a common thing on 4 cylinders I have owned but noisy GM lifters in general are a common thing. Can replace them but might be just as easy to flush the engine and see if that helps. Possible you could have an exhaust leak that could easily sound like a ticking noise, as well as a water pump, alternator, belt tensioner, to name a few suspects.

Should not need a shop. Look at Seafoam for one additive and many others out there. I usually do a short mileage oil change, say 500 miles or so using a cheaper oil then do another myself if I run across a dirty engine. You might even run a synthetic oil for 3000 miles, as it cleans pretty well, but do not run it all the time on an older car.
