dull noise coming from engine....

This is my first time on this message board and I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have a 95 Honda Accord LX V6 and there is a dull drawn out sound coming from the engine. It sounds like a low humming sound. The noise is sort of similar to a car with an after market exhaust but this sound is comeing from my engine. The sound only happens when i accerelate. I took it to a mechanic and he said that it is just the overdrive and that I shouldn't worry about it. I have never heard this sound from my car before. The sound is really prevalent when I am driving between 60-70mph. I haven't lost any power and I don't notice any driving difference, just the noise. My car is 7yrs old and it has 121,000 miles on it. Maybe this is just natural for a car this old, I'm not sure. Again, any help would be appreciated.

I'm not clear on the sound your explaining, but it might be something like a weak or slipping belt or an exhaust leak.

luti,

The noise sounds like a really low humming sound and you can only hear it when you accelerate. It gets louder as you go faster. Again, i've never heard this sound coming from my car. I had the belts changed around 100,000 miles so i'm not sure if that's it. How would i know if i had an exhaust leak? Thanks for you help.

I'm not sure how you would tell if it was an exhaust leak, maybe smell. I doubt its a belt, those are loud obnoxious whistles/squeaks... Maybe a bad bearing, or clutch?

Get your car on a lift or jackstands.. check if exhaust manifold to downpipe nuts are tightened. Running your engine while on a lift might help also. Have someone touch the gas or adjust the throttle body while someone under the car listening/smelling etc.
Finding out the source of car noises requires taking a look into history.. (i.e. what was I doing before the noise began).
See if it gets louder/softer when you turn on accesories like ac. If it does then check alternator.
Do some of those checks and let me know what you get.. Maybe I can help more.

Thanks again for the advice. I'm going to do all the things you two have said and see if I can't find the problem. I'll let you know what I find out. Again, thank you both.

I would recomend against going to that mechanic also. I have no idea how overdrive would make any noise at all. It is just another gear ratio that is less then 1:1.

if its cold enough outside in the morning when you start your car....look under neath for signs of an exhaust leak....im sure you know what i mean...the "steam"

and the sound could also be a bad bearing either the front wheel bearings or cv joints if you have never replaced them yet...

is there any sounds while your turning and accelerating?? light clunking or clicking?

i suspect a hum is a bearing...my sister 94 accord had a bad front wheel bearing and cv and it hummed while driving and it will get luder the faster you go
