which speedometer cable gear?

I took a look at the plastic drive gear for my 93 5.0, manual t-5's speedometer cable as 351wstang suggested and it was indeed shot. I can't find one at the usual array of local parts stores so I have been looking on the internet. The one that came out was a tan 23-tooth gear, which according to steeda is right (at least the 23 tooth part) for a 93, factory T-5 with an 8 tooth drive gear. I can only assume the rear-end is 4.10 since the tag is no longer on it. The only problem I have now is that the only 23 tooth gears I see are white or black. Does the color matter so much as long as the number of teeth are the same? I pulled one off of a ford tranny my brother-in-law had and it was identical except that it was a black 20 tooth, but otherwise I couldn't tell the difference. I did see a tan 23 tooth gear on another web site but it was for an AOD tranny. I don't think anyone owned this car long enough before my wife bought it to have replaced it with the wrong gear but I don't know. I just need to know which darn gear to go back with. :banghead:

Why do you think you have 4.10 gears? 2.73 is stock, unless the car has been modified thats probably what you have. Just go back with a 23 tooth gear and you will be fine.

yeah, the 4.10 did't sound right to me either. I was trying to go off the steeda website but as we all know being in print doesn't mean something is correct. Then there's the not so remote possibility that I simply misread the info I was looking at. They had a page with every year, engine size, then factory vs. modified that gave you 1st - 5th gear ratio and rear end ratio, etc. At any rate, I will simply go on the number of teeth that came out. Sounds like sound advice. Thanks.
