I plan to keep my 97GTP for a long time to come. Like a lot of you I'm sure. When the motor and or tranny decide to die in the car I plan to replace them or have them replaced. What do you think would be best, rebuild or just get a new crate motor? Post some web sites if you know of some that have decent crate motors. Also to rebuild a tranny what would you expect the cost or going rate now days for a total reman or rebuild would be?

The crate engine will give you a new engine to start with however, you can purchase a low mileage used engine from several sources that will give you good service at about 1/4th the cost of a new crate motor. Ed Morad, moradpartscompany.com can help you out with both a motor and tranny at a reasonable cost. Also you can try cherry-auto.com for a good used engine and you can purchase a warranty to go with the engine.
As for a rebuild, my 97 cost $2300 to rebuild to stock. You can purchase an improved tranny from zzperformance.com for about the same price although you will have to get it installed (extra cost) or do it yourself.
You can check crate prices at gmperformanceparts.com or try rockauto.com.
