I love the sound and torque of this car, but I'm betting there is a lot of potential to up the performance. Replaced the spark plugs, oil change every 3000, car has nearly 70k miles on it. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for how to increase the performance without putting too much strain on the car, and without spending more than a few hundred dollars.

Gears would definitely wake your car up off the line......if your not looking into any power adders ie: supercharger or turbo.....i suggest some 4.10's. If you plan on boosting later, a set of 3.73's would work very nicely, i own the 3.73's and it makes a HUGE difference.

Also some other suggestions that are cheap if you dont already have them would be a cold air intake, pulleys, full exhaust (headers, h or x-pipe, & cat-back exhaust) to name a few.

Look for a PI intake.

limits a few hundered? getting a 4.10, nice exhaust and a dyno tune as a shop should keep around 2k, if thats to much dont get a full exhaust, just get the gears and a dyno tune.

the gears and a good tune will wake her up nicely and not change your milage to much(if you are worried you can go to a 3.73 or 3.55 though)

Why would you get a dyno tune on a stock motor?

because a dyno tune can still bring out nice numbers, ford has a tendency to hot have the best timing and a/f for its cars....hell for my escort alone my car gained 14whp/11wtq peak and at 6k 19whp/15wtq gain over the stock Ford tune.

if he only wants a pickme up SCT + a quick dyno tune will bring some nice numbers.....stock does not mean its perfectly tuned.

Of course he can get some gains from a dynotune, but how much is it going to cost? An xcal2 plus a dynotune is going to be $700, for only a little more he can do a full PI swap and see MUCH better gains.

your $100 is prob for a dyno run, not a dyno tune.

I know my local dyno wanted $100 for me to tune my carb car on their dyno, only got 3 pulls.

that sounds reasonable....$700 could be to rent the dyno all-day for a performance tune or something of the like.
