tamiya paint question

hi all, first post so be gentle

i am just starting my first model and for the engine colour it says,

green (x5) +
flat green (xf-5)

does this meen mix the 2 together or paint one ontop of the other

daft question i know but worth knowing

Hi Jamie, welcome to AF. Yes they want you to mix them together, there should be ratio number written aswell to tell you how much of each color to mix together. It looks like they want a semi-gloss green.

i will mix 50.50 as there is no ratio stated

the car i am building is a old mini cooper which im guessing was one of the first kits produced as theres lots of casting marks etc

for 1/24 scale its tiny and goin to be difficult for a first build but i will give it ago

The ratio numbers are usually always given on Tamiya kits.It will be shown like this X-5:3 + XF-5:2 This would be 3 parts X-5 to 2 parts XF-5.The parts can be anything you like,drops,jars,mls etc.

While that's usually the case, on the Mini I believe it just says X5 + FX5. To keep with the instructions, I would probably mix it 50:50, for a semigloss green.

Welcome to AF Jamie.

The 1/24 Tamiya Mini is a terrific kit, but if it's you're first go at modeling it would probably be a good idea to set it aside for the moment and build a simpler kit first. The Mini will go together fine, but it is unnecissarly small (which in this case does add to the challenge), and it also has an engine. Another Tamiya curbside (engineless) kit would be a good place to get your feet wet and learn some of the basics before picking up the Mini again.

1:1 is the default ratio for Tamiya mixes. They give values if you need to anything other than that.

i am goin to put the mini to one side for now and build a curbside skyline,

i will visit the mini when i have a bit of experiance and maybe try some engine wiring and flocking to add a bit more detail
