aero turbine? hks? exhaust mufflers...

i have saved a grand for a good exhaust with dual outlet. i bought 2.5" mandrel bend pipe kit and y-pipe.

im considering: mufflers

i looked at Aero Turbines, the technology looks interesting. does it actually work?

i looked at APC's Titanium Intimidator mufflers. i like the idea of using a full titanium muffler cuz it would be lighter and never rust. stainless does rust, despite what people say.

i looked at HKS's Hi-Power Ti mufflers, only titanium tip.

i looked at Megan Racing's MSPECII carbon mufflers. i like the look of carbon + burnt tip.

ideas? do aero turbine mufflers technology really have any benifits?

No!

Made of the correct steel grade and treated correctly stainless steel do not rust (a layer of chromium oxide will protect the steel)! Titanium oxidize at temperatures above 600 degC when it is in contact with oxygen, this makes titanium unsuitable for exhaust systems in many applications.

stainless does rust, despite what people say.

Some does, not all stainless rusts. certain grades rust, and others don't. i believe T304 doesn't rust.

I guess the question is, what are you goals, and what is your price range to meet those goals?

If you are looking for the best performance for your dollars.....well.....this is the wrong discussion! :D

good/best performance, and something that doesnt sound like a tin can full of angry bees would be nice. but i guess that is what straight-through will always sound like. and straight-through is freest flowing...so sound is secondary

my best friend's can muffler was supposedly made of full t-304 and it is starting to rust. been on his car less then a year. are there any mufflers made of 409? its more durable and rust-resistant from what i have read...

i thought about just getting a cherry bomb/glasspack. one that is longer and is made of stainless, like dynomax thrush. or would that sound like total and complete ass on a sport compact? it certainly would flow well, no restriction in those things from what i have heard...

that will be harder to quantify....because everyone has their own idea on what is a good sounding exhaust system. I personally hate the straight-through exhaust noise on sport-compacts that are so popular today, and really, everone is doing it, so I'd be turned off to it anyway just because of that, even if I did like the sound of it :D

I'm not familiar with the different models specifically, but I would go for a free flowing multi chamber. It will be relatively quiet when cruising, but have a bit of noise at WOT. The power difference betwen a straight exhaust and a high flow multi chamber isn't measurable, most likely.

As for material, I cant' say I've seen REAL 304 rust. Some of the super cheap tawain made exhaust system though, lie on what their material composition is.

Titanium is nice no doubt, but if it really is titanuim, you'll be looking at a very expensive exhaust system. Its not worth the cost IMO.

Stainless steel containing more than 13-26% chromium will not rust given that it's treated and manufactured correctly .

AISI 409 is a cheap "stainless" steel for non critial areas. Contains only 11% chromium so it can rust. This alloy is used in cheap "stainless" exhausts.

If you've got the big bucks a stainless alloy like 353MA is the one to pick. 353MA is designed to handle temperatures above 1000 degC while in contact with gases containing sulfur.

AISI 304 contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10% nickel. 304 won't rust expect in very harsch conditions. If exhausts of 304 rust, there is probably something wrong.

Amen to that... anyone who thinks stainless wont rust should take a look at my factory "stainless" exhaust after 98k miles... looks more like raisin bran

oxidizing is what happens to all metals. Some do it in different fashions. SS304 exhaust components will not have a powdering red surface. It will turn brown, yes. It also cleans up very easily
