91 cougar trans?

I recently started having problems my cougar. I have an automatic transmission. the transmission only shifts to drive and when I try to put it in reverse nothing happens. All the transmission does is shift to drive. I do not know what the problem is. Could it be the detent cable or the transmission itself.
