1983 Toyota pickup electrical issues

I have a 1983 Toyota pickup with an engine that hiccups from time to time as well as misses from time to time (I've only noticed misses when the engine is warm). I have also seen it stall when flooring the accelerator while going up a steep grade. The "fix" is to back off the accelerator.
I keep the truck in Baja and my Mexican mechanic said the problem is "electrical" and that I probably don't want to spend the money to fix it. However, I read the thread about igniter issues and it seems to me I should at least get a backup igniter.
I'm wondering if the igniter could be the problem (or the pick up coil--whatever that is). You can probably tell I'm not very mechanically inclined.
Here in LA, the best price I've found for a used igniter is $75 and the best price for a new one is $240. Can't see spending $240 on a vehicle that might be worth twice that much.
Thanks in advance for any help.

A miss could be that, or distributor problem, even plug wires.
An ignitor from any 22R truck, 2wd or 4wd should work.
