wheels

Just a quick question, How compatible are wheels from different comapnies? I was j/w whether a wheel set bought from Fujimi would fit on a Tamiya model... etc. Also how do u tell how large some of the wheels are in HJL (those without dimesions listed in their titles)? does anyone know the size of these ---> http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?FUJ19196 ? i just started my first project and dont want to end up making mistakes along the way. thnx for all ur help.

fujimi wheels generally attach by inserting an axle or peg into the wheel itself. most of the kits that tamiya makes include wheels that have pegs built into them that insert into a hole in the brake pad. so generally speaking, they are opposites. sort of like male vs female. you will have to do some slight modification to fit fujimi wheels onto a tamiya kit (unless its of the same design). i havent had much experience doing such a switch but on the one that i did attempt, i incorporated a metal axle in the rear and used plastic rods to attach the front wheels. not the easiest way im sure. id like to see how other, more experienced modellers have swapped rims on their cars.

Hi. Tamiya usually has one certain way to fit their wheels; but there are some variations depending on the kit. You can make them fit but be prepared to put in some work! HTH!:cool:

Well im essembling my '99 evo 6 rally car and it comes with 2 sets of rims (one is for tarmac and the other for gravel? i think) and i want to use the 5 spoke rims instead of the smaller ones. When i tried to fit the rubber on the larger rims it is too skinny, so i wanted to try and get tries to fit. Unless someone knows the specific size rubbers i can get to use for that rim i guess i'm going to have to buy after market wheels. btw, is there a website for tamiya wheels?

dont think tamiya has wheels to sell separately. if you want certain rims from a particular kit from tamiya, you have the option of ordering the parts directly from tamiya. there should be information on their website. i've never tried it but ive read stories about it on this forum.

not really the rims i need, just need larger rubbers. And since this is my first kit i'm not too sure of the size i need myself :rolleyes:

PS: anyone who built the Tamiya Evo VI '99 New Zeland rally car know what size rubbers i should get to fit with the 5 spoke rims that came with the kit?

Those rims are 17" to 1/24 scale, here's a few pics of them on my civic with aftermarket "single-bolts"

*edit* by the way I've done wheel swaps before, all it really is, is studing the suspension by dry-fitting it, if your going to put Fujimi rims on a Tamiya car, you can test to see if the rims would go on without grinding, possibly drilling to fit the axel through. One easy way I found to do these conversions is by totaly removing the brakes to give the new rims "clearence." Then you can use the brakes that come with some of the aftermarket Fujimi rims, unfortunatly, the rims you pointed out dosen't come with them, well mine didn't anyway, or modify the existing brakes by removing the middle section so it wouldn't disturb the new rims. There are many ways on doing these conversions without sacrificing the turning abilities on your model, your job is to find the best way to do it with the least amount of modifications, read up at [url=www.tinyimports.com]Tiny Imports[/img], if you want to do the rim conversion and sacrifice turning abilities.
