rear wheel bearing

im trying to change the rear wheel bearings on a 96 3800 base model camaro, i have the chilton book and it says to remove the bolt holding the pinion shaft to release the axles, well i took the diff cover off and the pinion shaft doesn't have a BOLT! it looks to be pressed in but doesn't have any access points... I'm kind of lost right now.. if anyone knows how to remove the rear axles I'd be greatly appreciated... thanks alot all.

There is a bolt.
May have to turn the wheels to see it. At first, I didn't see it either.

i donno i looked again all i see is a litty bitty bolt at the bottom looks to be maybe an 8mm bolt? thats not it is it?

It has been a while.
I can check my 10 bolt sitting on the garage floor when I get home. But mine bolt isn't in there.
Maybe this will help.
With the caliper out of the way, the rotors pull off if you didn’t forget to release your e-brake. To remove the backing plate the axle will need to come out first. Remove the rear cover and let the fluid drain into a receptacle. Rotate the carrier until you see a small 8mm bolt. Depending on your car, it will either have a Torsen rear end (identifiable by the paddle) or an Auburn (which uses an axle pin). Either will slide out when the bolt is removed. If you have a car with ASR, you will need to remove the rear speed sensors from the backing plate, each held on with a 10mm bolt. Then push each axle towards the middle of the car and the c-clip should jingle jangle to the bottom of the housing. After that, the axles can be pulled out.

Heh, those rear wheel bearings can be barrels of fun. My dad was driving his 67 down the interstate when he had one go bad causing his rear wheel driver side wheel to come off and pass him.

well i just changed them out... i don't see how one going bad could cause the wheel to come off?? long as the c-clip is in it shouldn't pull out

Its sound like you had fun on this one! I was ready to reply a post on this to help as I had just changed mine on a '95 Base 3.4 Camaro. From your 1st post I would not guess you would have it complete all ready!!!! DAm@#$%! That is good!!
