My 3000gt base vs. 91 supra

So this kid thought his supra was so fast because its a supra and yes it has the stock small turbo in it, he has intake, racing seats, carbon fiber hood, and he wanted to run me. On my ride i have a injen intake, full catback with downpipe, Apexi Neo SAFC, lowered Eibach kit springs, cams and i have the advantage of less weight bcuz i have the base model. He was all like dude your car is so slow bcuz its heavy and i have a turbo blah blah, i ran him to finally shut him up quarter mile i beat him by 2 lengths, and the kid lost $50 on it, so hes like i want to search your car cuz i know your spraying. I was like dude just except the loss and pay up or im gonna break your neck. The kid paid, now he wants to sell his car now and buy a vr4, ha the irony!

Yup cams helped me crazy style, and they sound nice. I purchased them from 3sx for like 400 bucks i believe a while ago, but it was worth the money.

can you be more specific? they don't sell cams for 400, only 700 and up.

those are Adjustable Cam Gears. not camshafts. big difference.

i almost picked up a set of those for 200, but another guy beat me to it.

cam gears allow you to advance/retard timing (which is just the duration). camshafts change the duration AND LIFT of the valves.

what are your settings on the cam gears?

Right now it is -3 retard on the exhaust cams +2 on the intake cams

Yeah, but Scott was looking at as early 80s Celica-Supra that is a HUGE difference. This guy raced a 91' Turbo. They have 232 horses and 254 ft/lbs of torque stock to his 222 horses and 217 ft/lbs of torque. That's a lot of torque to make up, and I don't think he can with those mods. Not to mention, he only has about 75 extra pounds over him, not much.

Plus RWD is better than FWD for traction. Its pretty clear that the guy with the supra sucked at driving.

i absolutely LOVE how underestimated the 3/s is. probably my favorite characteristic of the car.

my experince is different. i've raced supra's mkIII's a good condition one, kept up pretty good with my vr4 when i was bone stock, i beat him by 2 car lengths. i'd put my money on it against a rx-8. its not impossible he won and i'm not saying for a fact its a bs story. i was saying if he beat him by 2 car lengths in a base 3kgt then either the guy couldnt drive very well, his engine isnt in good condition or the story is bs

Guess this is a pretty late reply, but no it wasn't. It was an '89 with 35k on it, mint condition, white...it was nice. I got to do first and second gear, felt like my N/A so I wasn't all that impressed.

1990' supras are a lot slower than our cars, especially from a roll. I pull on my buddies 1990 supra all day. He keeps up for a few seconds but after my rpms jump up after 4k, hes got no game.

side note: his supras isnt as well maintained as mine...hes gotta bad head gasket

Hey my story isn't quite as impressive, but i got a '97 SL w/o mods and I was racing some supra (don't know the year) and I beat it. Just barely, but I did by about 1 length. So i'm assuming that he had the base supra (if there is such a thing) and I was just offering my experience in case it correlates with the rest of this "turbo'ed" thread

it's kinda funny i have a 3kgt. i used to have a supra, but i lost it at 140. i was on the highway and a semi just switched lanes on me. i managed to salvage a lot of parts off of it, by my 2jz was gone. one of the first cars i took on was a vr4 [after my build] and smoked it by about two cars. but now i see my 3k and wish that that vr4 woulda won lol

Dude im sorry for your loss, your lucky to be alive. Your Supra was a TT then right if you beat a vr4?, im sure your 3k feels slow now lol.

Oh, i was under the impression that his supra was tt and his 3k is n/a. Thats why i said it would feel slower, but if they are both tt it should feel really close.

Alright for all you crazy supra lovers out there who say i am full of shit and lying about this race and its impossible for me to win, i just looked up the stock quarter mile times on a couple diff. websites the 91 supra turbo they run low to mid 15's, so how was that race not possible?
