I saw a thread like this on another forum, and it was funny as hell, sooo,I thought I could try it here. :p
Here you post some habits you took from modelling and use them sometimes! :grinno:
You know when you're nutting at modelling,when...
1-Sometimes you look at some stuff and can't see your reflection right and ya think: "WHOA! That has some nasty orange peel!!"
2-When you sneeze you say "Kitbashiiiing..." (I did it once! :cwm27: :screwy: )
3-When you eat cereal with milk, you pour them at the same cup at the same time like resin.(one more thing I did once....or twice. :screwy: :icon16:)
I can't think about more stuff right now,so post 'em if you know some! :p

When going into the BMW showroom, i examined the paint very very closely. And dude, that surface actually is less smooth then my models.

It's supposed to be. That's one of the nasty little things about scale modeling- our flaws should in theory be 1/24 the size of the real thing. Even factory paint on modern Ferraris are not perfectly smooth, but our orange peel should be only 1/24 the magnitude of theirs. Pretty close to optically perfect....

Yep, but not at 100%: despite the shining finishing BMWs have ever a coarse orange peel, ita ponys haven't it since there're hand finished, just like our models ;) :D

I agree, today i was looking at a BMW X5 and noticed some bad orange peel! Even when i was about like 2 meters away from it, i was so disappointed and here we spend like how long to get a perfect finish!

BMWs are painted with environment-friendly water-based paints from the factory, and this results in more orange peel than other manufacturers. They are pioneers in this and helping preserve our planet for future generations. Ferraris and most others are painted with solvent based chemicals, which results in smoother finish, but also very harmful for environment.

All mainstream manufacturers are painting their cars with those "environmentally friendly" paints these days. There's only a handful of suppliers and they sell all of them more or less the same stuff. Maybe some of the chinese dudes are a bit behind....environment isn't exactly their big concern these days it seems :-)
Some of the coatings used in car manufacturing these days aren't even wet anymore. They are more like an electrostatic "dust" and are literally baked in with heat. There's not a big chance for the stuff to level out during "drying" hence the orange peel.....

And as for hand rubbed Ferrari finishes, that's what I always thought, too. But I have seen some woefull orangepeel on factory fresh Ferraris at dealers. Modern ones, like a 360CS and 612. :dunno:

All manufacturers are supposed to go to water based paint starting in 2009 (at least here in Canada) All bodyshops must used water based paint starting then and will be fined or closed down if found otherwise.

So does this mean us modelers are going to be stuck with only acrylics after 2009?

No, but it certainly means that over the last few years automotive laquers have become harder to get ahold of. It's an outdated medium, and already many recent colors can't be mixed in laquers.

Was looking over a Ferrari 599 with the importer @ Goodwood last year... the paint quality was great from about 2 meters out, but up close was very disapointing. The dealer wasn't too impressed when I pointed that out... especially when I commented that my four year old Porker had far smoother paint:lol:

You call your models "your" cars!! (I do it all the time!)
Like,I said once..."I just painted my Golf!!!" :icon16:
Then a friend of mine got all excited because he tought that I had a car. o_O :screwy:

...you spend 15 minutes in the cosmetics department looking for those little eyeshadow applicators so you can weather something (the girls give the funniest looks and explaining what you're actually up to does not help!).
...you go to Vegas and the loot you're most excited about is a VW 23 window bus that you're carrying through the airport.
...every time you modify your 1:1 you cuss because it's one more modification you'll have to make to the 1:24 you're going to make one day.
...you're pleased when your girlfriend goes out of town because you'll have time to work on your models. But then you spend all that time writing long messages on AF that no one will read anyway....
