Stalling on highway

I'm having a wierd problem with my GA (2000, 2.4l). After 20 miles or so of highway driving the engine starts to slightly flutter, then quits responding to throttle and slowly deccelerates until about idle, then flutters for a few seconds and finally dies. There is nothing I can do once it starts but pull over. I then shut the car off and after 2 minutes or so it starts right up like nothin ever happened. From there its good for a few more miles where it does the same thing again but within a shorter distance, say 10 miles. If I try to start it up immediately after it dies it spits and backfires and such. Other than that it idles and drives great!
I changed the fuel filter in hopes of having an easy fix but that didn't help any. The service engine light never came on until after I replaced the filter, http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/images/smilies/lol.gif.
This has been a great car up until now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks

I'd rig up a fuel pressure guage and watch and see if the pressure drop off just before the engine begines to fluctuate. One other thing would be a crank position sensor crapping out, although I'm not sure if your engine uses one.

Welcome to AF guys !
gersus, could be many things causing your troubles.
A Faulty IAC, contaminated fuel, damaged(or wet) ignitions wires and thier components , bad plugs or incorrectly gapped, a vacum leak at the intake manifold or plenum(cracked hoses).
Might not hurt to get it scanned with a good scan tool.
And as Jim said check your fuel pressure.
Hope that helps.
