Torque arm/ tranny bolt

The upper bolt hole where the torque arm bolts to the tranny is stripped out. What is the best way to fix this? One friend suggested a Helicoil and another said to fill the hole with JB Weld, then drill and tap it.

Not sure I would fill it.

Helicoils hold well.

jb welds not the best thing in the world..

I like the way that arm is mounted but there is not one listed for an '89. Plus, since I just bought the car last week most of my available playin' around cash is gone for right now. Hoping for a cheaper fix until I get a few more bugs worked out of the car.

UMI third gen tunnel mounted torque arm hasnt been released yet... they have only made like 3 too

When i first put my 350 in my firebird, i went from a standard to an automatic. Soon after the install, the back of the transmission where the torque arm hooks to broke completely off the transmission.

If its just a bolt hole, make your own mount. You could re-thread it and use a bigger bolt also. IMHO the original ones are stupid, when mine broke it beat the crap out of the underside of my car, and then drug the street and bent the torque arm nearly in half.

heres mine, its been this way for years now, no probs. And im quite rough on it.

I like the idea of making the mount but the rear of my trans looks a little different than yours. I'll take a closer look and see what I can come up with. I like fabricating my own parts when I can. Probably going to make my own subframe connectors and strut tower braces.

yeah it is except a series of washers between the mount and arm to keep it from wearing out. I think i used two plastic washers with a rubber one in between if i remember right. The bolt isnt tight so it allows some movement. I check it every time i get it on a lift and it has shown no signs of probs where the arm and mount connect.

I didnt intend this car to ever be on the street or i would have made it a little different. Actually i modeled mine from one i saw somwhere else, i dont recall where if it was online or at the shop. It started to clunk last summer when i put it into "R or D" and i thought i broke the mount i made and it ended up just being the transmission mount.

The way i drive my car i figured it would let go or mess something up long before now since ive jumped railroad tracks, gone mudding ect in this car with no probs other than a few spots where i high-centered it on a rock several times in a row out at the lake.

Just to let everyone know, I retapped the bolt hole and it's holding for now. Probably just a matter of time before it strips again. I think I'll make a new mount as soon as I get the time. Thanks for the suggestions and pics, gave me a few ideas.

Cool. Maybe it will hold for a long time, you never know. I figured mine would be a temporary fix also, and its still holding.
