angled muffler the only way??

okay check it out. Im not the kind to break down and buy a stainless steel fart tube with matching tip, but my wife wanted one on her Neon so she bought one. well, some dumbass kids rearended her and it put a little tiny dent in the muffler tip so we claimed it on the insurance. well we took it to the repair shop and they said i could keep the old muffler so im probably going to try and stick it on my civic. I know that it wont fit straight out the drivers side without some extreme +90 degree pipe bends and that would totally reverse the free flow effect of the muffler. I dont want to mount it angled out the drivers side, I was thinking of running a straight pipe back and out the passenger side but then i have th problem of the muffler notch in the bumper. Is there a way to run the exhaust piping straight out the drivers side if it was a custom job, or would it hit on the suspension? or maybe its not possible at all.

what should i do, try to mount it anyways, or just sell it for what i can get out of it and buy an aftermarket 4th gen angled exhaust?

what do you all think?

mine is slightly angled its about 1 inch from hitting the suspention
but never hits, i have seen mufflers straight on a hatch before. Go to a muffler shop and see what they can do
what kinda muffler is it?

mine is straight, havent had any problems with it, it runs right beside my rear stabalizer bar without a problem

or you could do what i did a while back and have them cut off ur huge monster tip and hang the muffler in so it is like the stock one, and then have stock looking pipes coming out the back

Its an arospeed one. I think they sell the same one in JCWhitney. Let me see if i can find a picture of the back of my wifes car...

the reason it sticks out so far on that neon is because the tip had to clear the bumper where the notch between tip and muffler is. I didnt want to cut a big hole in her bumper because it was a new car

Melt,
that looks good!!! I had been hoping for something like that when I was researching my muffler options. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to locate a muffler that was short enough to fit like that, unless I bought a stupid short ugly coffee can.

I ended up getting a custom turbo job done, so except for the 2.25" tail pipe, it looks stock ;) I need to get my digi cam S/W installed so I can get some pics. :(

91 CivicDXDude - I think you can get a muffler comin' straight out the right side...don't worry about the notch...if the shop hangs it as high as they can so it is just below the bumper, it should be high enough...it might look a little silly with the muffler not coming out of the notch..you may want to consider filling in the notch on the other side, then I think it would look tight ;) I am not a Neon fan, but too bad some dumb-ass rear-ended your wife's car

I got mine done the same as melts @ the same shop. If u run new piping back & stick it on the stock side u wont have any problem with 2 many bends. r engines r realtively small, I ran 2.25 piping from cat back & has plenty of flow. Here's a pic of mine.

i plan on putting 2.5" from the catback and then use that arospeed muffler. I guess if it dont work, then it dont work. but if it does, then yay for me :D

Great info! I thought for shure I was going to have to angle the muffler when I got around to getting one put in. I'm planning to get one of those revolution mufflers w/ the carbon fiber wrap and the tip that changes colors when hot (Tanabe Style). I'll post pics when I get it done.
