What are your thoughts about the bombings in Bali? Majority of Australians killed 100+. It's a fucked up world.

I think that it is a terrible thing to happen, as to why, who knows. I'm just sick of when anything happens everyone instantly thinks Osama Bedlinen.

Come on guys....surely you can whore in another thread :(

Judge.....Thats a pretty narrow minded out look on life you have. I wonder if your family would be saying the same if you were in the building or you had loved ones in it

This is another shocking act that has once again rocked the world. These type of people dont seem to worry about who or what they halm...we all just seem to be an enemy to there ways of thinking.
This is starting to get to close to home for my liking.
With crazy snipers running around and now this, it looks like no one will be safe if this type of things continue to happen.

I was thinking on Friday "gee I'm glad I live in New Zealand, fr from trouble" but now it seems like trouble is heading more wide spread and is begining to reach the Pacific.

Makes you ask the question. "Why Bali?"

Sorry folks, it's going to take a couple of days for me to get perspective on this. As a frequent traveller and someone who spent a lot of time backpacking around all sorts of places, I am really moved by the events of the past few days so I'll have to get back to you.

here is an extract from an email I recieved from a friend of mine on peace keeping duties in East Timor

The bizzare thing is that we are armed all day, every
day and at the back of our minds is the fact that
rounds could come our way in the worst case(and in
fact the NZ troops in the bush have opened fire on
people 3 times in the last week) but there are
currently about 30 Portugese peacekeepers who were in
Bali on leave who are unaccounted for.

They are part of the Force here and they have gone on
leave from this "dangerous" place and get blown to
bits in a safe tourist destination like Bali!!!

due to the bombings they are now on an even higher alert

Two reasons:

1, its part of indonesia, the worlds most populace Muslim country, with a history or terrorist problems.

2, (the conventional view) Its a favorite holiday destination for Australians, currently only the 2nd country to be offering any serious surport to president bush.

2, (the consipary theory view) Its a favorite holiday destination for Australians, and by faking a terrorist attack against Ausi citizens Australias surrport for Bushs war on terror will increase, as well as a possible change in the view of many other western nations. NZ included. (believe it or not, but we actualy have quite a say in the UN)

However this is a very scary event.
My brother was on holiday in that Area at the start of this year, and I have a friend in Japan who was planning a holiday there soon.
I think every Kiwi here will know someone who is somewhere in the world on thier OE, and a lot of Australians will have known people killed or injured in the blast.

It was also clearly an attack against forgin interests in Bali, and Indonesia. And it serves as a very real reminder that our little corner of the Pasific is not as safe and stable as we like to think it is.

But what is more worriesome for me is, if it continues, and Bush gets the surrport he wants then a very large scale war has the potential to develop, not only in the middle east, but also in the Asia Pasific region.
A war in the middle east as a Kiwi I can avoid, a war right next door I would have to become a part of.

America is a very safe country, due to its size and geographic isolation it is almost impossible to invade. The technology exists to destroy it, but not even America has the military power to take it self over, if an attack was launched from else where.
Here in NZ or Australia we are very vunrable to any large scale military action in the Asia Pasific region.
And both out nations are known to make extremly good strategic locations. During WWII the Japanese made quite desperate attempts to get here before the US did, and it was only Luck and Skill that prevented the Japanese take over of at least Northern Australia (they made it as far as Papa New Guinea).
Any war waged against terrorism in the Asia pasific region would see both NZ and Ausie become the subject of attack. Something I really do not want to be a part of.

To be honest, I am really at a lose for words. Seeing this happen is like 9/11 happening all over again. The death toll is a lot smaller, but the scenario is still the same.

It's times like these that I appreciate more the things around me and life in general. What drives a person to the point of taking innocent lives to support his cause? When the U.S. attacks occurred and we responded, people immediately assumed we were going to get all muslims. We don't care for their religion and whatever other possible excuse that can be mustered was used. But in reality, we were defending ourselves. Now granted, I am not in total aggreeance whatsoever with the way my government is doing things, but, we are the main ones doing anything about it.

As it stands, the US is probably going to have to do something about this attack too. While Moppie's suggestion or "Conspiracy theory" would seem viable, we have to remember one important thing, we are not directly seeing everything that is panning out. The only thing we have to view is media and we all know how easy it is to manipulate them. I seriously doubt that the US would knowingly allow innocent civilians, overseas for that matter, intentionally let them die in order to get support. But I do believe that this is a wake up call to all those who are opposed to US views to get on the bandwagon, as you are not safe as you may claim to think.

I remember a while back how the issue of American views and the world against America was hot and debated quite a bit. Will it take a cowardice killing like Bali(God Forbid), to get everyone to pull the sheets from over your eyes? I know we are not the most popular country right now, but I will say this, if I had a choice, I know where I would be. Primera Man and Moppie, both have their reasons for worrying and or having concern.

We are dealing with irrational zealots who care for nothing but the promotion of their cause. My personal opinion/belief is, I think now is a time for Muslims to speak in one voice and disrupt these terrorists who use their religion as a reason for conducting these attrocities again innocent civilians.

In closing, I just have this to say to all of you. It is only when ones own is affected, that one takes action. Why wait for that to happen? Why leave the door open to the danger that you know is out there when you have that chance now to put it out? I don't know what events we are in for in the future, but I just hope to all the members of AF that you will be safe.

I've been trying to get perspective on this. It took me a long time after the terror last year to get perspective on those events so I apologise for taking so long to get back to you.

Last night I was reviewing the news feeds from a variety of sources, CNN, Sky News Australia, CNBC, BBC World, my own TV in NZ and newspapers in Australia and New Zealand. I think the most gut-wrenching thing was a montage of photos that people who were killed on the Sydney Morning Herald's website (www.smh.com.au) today.

So many lives lost, so many injured, so many families torn apart, so many communities affected. So many innocents. Such violence. Such terror, such sadness.

:(

I have to admit I've seen way too much of man's inhumanity to man in my travels. I've questioned whether my faith in mankind is misplaced, whether we truly are a wretched species and the earth would be better off without us. Even now I have reservations about the goodness in our hearts and how we seem so eager to inflict harm for our idealism or a buck.

But I do have one thing that I feel say is that I still have hope. Hope that we can see justice, hope that this doesn't lead to bigotry and hate. Hope that innocent Balinese, Indonesian, Moslem folk don't suffer from the actions of others seeking vengeance at convenient although innocent targets. Hope we can celebrate the memories of those who have fallen - and hope we can do in our way, even in the smallest ways, our actions honor them and their families.

P-Man asked me my what I thought this would do to my attitudes to travel. I still believe that I will travel and I still think that it has been a better education about others and myself than the certificates and degrees I hang on the wall. If you asked me would I go to Bali - I have to say no I wouldn't go @ the moment but I wouldn't have before either, because of beliefs I have about Indonesia that I won't elaborate on.

The dictionary defines terrorism as use of violence as a form of coercion to a group of people or government. We need to resist terrorism by not allowing these acts by desperate zealots to coerce us and our governments. As some of you know I don't agree with a lot of things that some of our leaders advocate. But I believe we all have our belief sets and our perspectives of issues that leads us to our opinions and conclusions - and the ability to express differing views is part of a robust and healthy democracy.

I'll finish by saying I hope we can have Justice for those who would use the blood of innocents to further their cause. And that like the victims of every act of senseless violence we can honor their memories by ensuring we can do what we can to continue the pursuit of Justice in a very unjust world.

Maybe it is just a British thing... At a cerain set time, everyone falls silent for exactly 2 minutes across the country, including all TV, Radio and other broadcasts. It is to remember and reflect on the occasion it is for, and as a mark of respect.
