Shift Knob help

I have a 1997 SH, and yesterday got a momo carbon fiber shift knob. I got the origonal one off, but can't figure out how to get the little piece on the end of the new knob under the mouth of the leather 'cone' (dont know the proper name) to get the new knob secured. any help would be much appreciated.
