Hey,
To start things off when i forst got my z24, the firs night I had it I blew an engine, and whgat it did was under the valve cover, make a loud clicking noise and got louder the longer you drove it and faster as you revved....I got a replacement engine put it, had 165,000K on it, its got about 185 now and today same symptoms again, but a more silent click, but sounds the same......is it another blown engine? The car still drives but to be safe im leavin it in the driveway.......any suggestions? And if I replace it will a 2.4L Ecotec fit in there? I got a 97 Z24 2.4L Twin Cam.....thanks

well, what was the problem with the first engine? sounds maybe like a spun rod bearing or something of that sort. and yes, the 2.4 eco will fit, BUT will require a lot of modification, its all electronic as far as i know and will require so much modification, it will not be worth the swap in the first place. that and its an expensive engine and there arent too many around just yet, so good luck finding one for a reasonable price even if you do decide to do it.

the 2.4L twin cams have a habit of doing exactly what you've described, it starts out with just a bearing, but if you let that go unfixed for too long, you will also lose the rod
and for some reason im thinking its ALWAYS the #3 cylinder....

How can you fix it, people are telling me the motor is done....but is there a way to fix it, I dont want to fork out $1500 to get a replacement engine....

if you dont wanna fork out $1500 for a new engine, say goodbye to ur 2.4 ecotec idea.

185,000 k`s on it . I`d be looking for one with a lot less on it before I`d put big bucks into this engine . but that`s just my opinion.

Yea well I dont know what to do....the local junkyard around here has a 2.4 for $800, and it will cost me 400 to get put in. But the way to get moeny was to sell my other cavi this friday, but tonight it stopped working, i was driving, and it started bogging, couldn't accelerate, then it shut off and wont startback up, it will turn over and just keep trying and trying to start but it wont....

well that sux....dont worry about spending $800 on another engine. just get the one u have in it fixed. hell, give me $600 and a weekend and ill fix it for ya, as long as its just a spun bearing. it would be FAR cheaper to get the one u have fixed than spend $1200 on another engine

Im in Canada :(, I dont know what it is for sure yet, some say Lifter, some say bearing, etc......i dont know what it is, it makes a clickclickclick noise and gets faster as the car revs......and a bit louder the longer you drive it.

ya know...you could always go to the local bookstore or library and read up on engine repair and the diagnosis on what is wrong. If you spend a little time reading i bet you will find the answer to you knock problem and spend a fuckload less money fixing your car.

Yep Derk, its a knock/click.....goes faster as you rev........and when you coast it doesnt make noise, for example, letting off the gas and let the car coast when driving, wont make the noise, only when you accelereate.

Bringing this thread back to life, yea both engines I blew, rod bearing went, then I drove the piss out of them for about a month until the clicking got louder and louder and then crunch and the engine wouldnt fire back up. If this happens again, is it actually cheaper and possible to get the rod bearing replaced, and I presume you will have to do all 4 and while at it, might as well throw a metal head gasket in while its opened up......just wondering...this engine seems to be running mint, no problems..........yet. Just wish these babies would last like a 2.2......then it would be a very very nice engine, they got lots of power, too much for the engine to handle lol.

not sure if it'd be cheaper or not, i guess that depends on where you got your internals and where you get your engines, ive seen sets of internals go for $1000 and ive seen junkyard engines go for $500, so in that sense it wouldnt be cheaper....
if i remember correctly, weak internals are not the problem, the problem is oil does not make it to the top of that #3 cylinder like its supposed to, so you're gonna have the same problem with new internals, they just might last you a little longer,
