CD Player thinks it has CD in it...but it doesn't

A couple of months ago I had a CD get stuck in my CD player, it got stuck because it had an adhesive CD label stuck to the top of it. Instead of it coming straight out it went down and under a lip of some sort. My friend tried to be helpful and stuck a screwdriver in there and pushed it back some so it came back out. Now that the CD is out the player still thinks there is a CD in there. What can I do? Is there a reset or possibly something broken internally?
