I was wondering if anyone knew for sure....

Will a rear-end from a 96 Firebird fit under a 91 Camaro....

Both are coil spring setups.

The Camaro measures APPROX......

Backingplates---56"
Center of coil spring mounts-----40 1/2"

If you know, let me know....

Thanks

Yeah the rear does fit under the 91. i belive your wheels will stick out about a inch or so on each side.

correct. it fits. i think your wheels will actually stick out somewhere between 1.5-2 inches.

Thank you ...that is the answer I was hoping for!!

Do you know what the ratio is on that rear?
I am running 3.73's right now, and really like them.

Evidently, it is a stock rear, it does have the clutch packs, so I guess it is a posi-lock. That is my only reason for changing the rear, as I just put all new bearings in this one.

im pretty sure those cars came with varying gear sets. it's likely somewhere around 3.23/3.42. all you have to do is pull the cover off, count the ring gear teeth and the pinion gear teeth and the gear ratio = ring teeth % pinion teeth.

also you can put your 3.73s in that fourth gen rear too.

If it's out of a v8 car it MOST LIKELY has 3.42s

isnt it 3.42 for the manuals and then 3.23's for the autos?

I talked to the guy that I am getting it from......yes.....I am getting it!!! lol

Anyway, He said it is 3.42's, I don't think I will take too big of a hit going to these from a 3.73.

I know the motor will handle it!

How much do you think it is worth??

Thanks for all your help. I am coming here from a different forum, based here in St. Louis, and may I say, you guys are much more mature and helpful.

Thanks again, and I look forward to talking to all of you more......

Sorry, those videos (in the multimedia section) aren't that great......more to come!

good. im glad you are having a good experience. welcome.

i would probably only pay aroun $220 for it... but that's not necessarily how much its worth.... that depends on what it means to you. I dont really know why you are swapping a 7.5" 10 bolt with 3.73s for another with 3.42s.... disc brakes???

yea... you're losing acceleration

I was thinking about swapping the gear set, keeping the 3.73's.......

Reason: Posi-lock

Lookign at your sig.... how long do you really think a 10 bolt will last behind that motor?

Answer: Not very long.

ChevyHiPerformance did a test on a T5 and it broke around 330lb.ft. of torque. You engine will probably make that while its turned off. I'm not 100% sure, but I think a well built 7.5" 10bolt will hold up until <380-400hp. But if you dont have stickies or do hard lauches that wont be a problem as much at the tranny.

Recommendation: dont get crazy with the throttle unless you already have plans and money for an appropriately built T56 or an automatic (unless you want to go older with TH300/400 and then worry about getting different crossmember and driveshaft).

let us know how it goes.

A friend once gave me a T-5 from his totaled '85 Camaro. Put it in my '67 GMC with a SBC 355. Worked great for a week of driving back and forth to work.......then came the weekend!!! So much for the T-5. Nothing left inside but a bunch of pieces. Wish I had taken some pics.

Of course, after a while, it broke, but nothing like what you are saying......it was not too bad.

But yeah, I know the tranny and rear are next!
First things first!!!

lol! I love it! That sounds exactly like something I would have said.

Actually, I have been quoted as saying "I think of stoplights as drag race light trees". Speed-addicted minds think alike.

Like I said, let us know how it goes.... ;)
