Ive wanted a 3000gt vr-4 since i was like 15. the other day i finally got one. 1991 3000gt vr-4 seems to be in good shape. Body is clean and dent free with new glossy paint (with 4 year warrenty on it) Wheels are wearing evenly brakes have ~70% left all electronics functioning great all in all car seems to be in good condition. The inside though. oh boy. they put in racing seats (nice install ill give them that) but doesnt look right. They put in a nice sound system redid Trim in carbon fiber (yuck) and they also put in a new air intake (custom intake with single filter) and new blowoff valve. I paid way to much for the car (was cheapest in 200 miles that was worth anything) Im worried sick about the car though, 120k miles had the 60k tune up done. recently had new plugs but other than blow off adn intake is stock. What would yall sugest i do? my instinct says tear down the motor check everything regasket the whole thing replacing anything i find worn. The turbos how do i tell if they are at all warped? i mean im told the stock boost guage is worthless now (cause its been slightly modded) or at least i dont trust it for maybe age or maybe im parinoid. i cant afford to replace them quite yet so lets hope not. And i also read that the 91s run 9 lbs boost where 94-97 run 11. any chance of increaseing my stock turbos upto 11? ill be happy under 15 lbs which most say is limit for stock fuel systems. any input would really help and i love reading yall ideas. thanks -mike

I did read the FAQ lots of car washing and yes it does give alot of good info. Ill reread it but i dont recall turbo inspection. And i did check the checks it sugested. Ive probly read all i can on this car. I guess i was hoping somebody would tell me "go for it cant hurt to inspect the valves and pistons and cams ect ect ect " but i also have 2 young childen and my JOB is to raise them so i cant or shouldnt babysit them and watching them while under my car is not really an option. I look forward to seeing some more pics and reading more posts

so long as the 60k was done it doesnt sound like you have any reason to do engine work. Do you know if they did the oil pump too, along with the timing belt/water pump stuff, as you should at 120k?
If theres no smoke on startup, no oil on the ground, and you dont hear screetching, the turbos are ok. I dont remember what the recommended turbocharger rebuild interval is, but i know its less than 120k. I would just not worry about them until they start to go, then use that as an excuse to upgrade.
They most likely put racing seats in because the stockers were torn up. The first thing to show wear on these cars is the leather seats. If you want the stock ones back, try the 3si.org. They have a for sale section on the forum, always a few people parting cars.
Stock boost gauge...as well as oil pressure gauge...are not worth the plastic they are made of. The stock boost gauge isnt even hooked up to a pressure source.
Boosting to gen 2 levels{10-12psi)...its called the "free boost mod" and can be done in 5 minutes with a paperclip.
With a manual boost controller you can get the stockers to 15, but i wouldnt go higher than 14 for safety. The stock turbos cant run that kind of boost efficiently anyway past about 5krpm.

my suggestion, drive and enjoy it. keep an eye on all the oil level and coolant and such until your sure its not leaking/burning anything. Dont do any high rev clutch dumps.
Also, stick around here. Youve come to a great place if you ever have questions.
ALSO, read the FAQ! everything i posted above is in the FAQ...

welcome to AF

the answer is the morning. i just signed for my baby, then i went out and started an inventory for what and when i was going to repair /need to repair things. Few probloms i didnt see before but nothing that has me seriously worried. I did have some questions, first i have no idea if the boost gauge in there is stock or after market and ill be cursed if i know what its saposed to read yet. but 15 lbs vacume at idle and 4k rpms dips it to 10 lbs vacume but both are nutral so it might not mean anything. My active aero doesnt work. i dont know if its the switch or the motor or what , basically it doesnt do anything in any position of the switch (im used to setting auto and it doing its test flap thingy). How long does it normally take for exhaust to switch from tour to sport? and back? is ASC also known as cruise control (automatic speed contol maybe?) man im a goof . Ill try to get yall some pics in morning. any advice or comments on what i mentioned would be apriciated. Ill get a shot of the boost gauge and maybe yall can tell me if its whacked or whatnot. thanks -delerius1 P.S. I searched and found the page about checking the real spoiler motor (link in other thread from that moderator guy who claims to drink alot) And i tracked down a repair manual so looks like i got a few days of uter bliss ahead of me. I LOVE YOU ALL but i love your cars more. -mike

*reverts back to his time in the navy and silently (kids are around) swears up a string that would make my senior chief proud* ths pics are gonna be late. So many electical grimlins i didnt know about. Passenger window doesnt work ( it did when i paid for car 2 weeks ago) and the factory alarm is acting up , the after market alarm is working fine but sometimes the factory alarm gets armed and i cant disarm it (found out my keys dont open door lock on drivers side or trunk) I discovered the Radio (fm receiver) is intermintedly hooked upto the antenna. I knew the seats needed remounting but i managed To fit my car seats in it to drive up to show my friends. in order to fit the carseats in my feet are against the dash (which subsenqently dislodged the power mirror switch (which does nothing i found out) I got a replacement switch already i just pray the motors are good. and the touring sport and rear wiper switch panel poped out and wont lock back in. to many wireing grimlins and so im gonna do the smart thing, Maggie is going into a grauge and im gonna get my wireing diagrams and multimeter and keep her there til shes done. will be good stress relief (or stress inducer who knows) :licka: wish me luck -mike

good plan and good luck hunting the electrical gremlins. i'm having intermittent problems with my power window switches as well, and i know the regulators are both good (replaced them). as for the mirror and touring switch panels, mine pop out too. quick fix is just to get some clear silicone and glue them in. don't worry about it sticking, you'll be able to easily pry them out later if you have any reason to.
