Performance chip?

I have seen on ebay where you can gain like 35 HP by adding a cheap chip to the Malibu. there are also one that up your fuel economy by 4 or more miles per gallon. Has anyone tried one of these or have any real facts to share about them? I see good and bad in the feedback but have to admit it seems unreal? I would like real facts from people who own/ tried one. Anyone here got info on these or any other chips or performance ad ons? Thanks in advance.

Ahh.. The infamous e-bay chips.. The simple answer is no. 99.98% of the cheap add on chips on ebay dont work. A good show is Mythbusters where they actually put several of these devices to the test, and they all failed.

Easiest, and most cost effective way is to use the HP tuners program to re-tune the stock ECM.

thanks for the reply,, I figured that they wouldn't work. However, I did buy a chip for my 92 Silverado years ago, and it helps my truck big time. The main thing it helped was it changed shift points and stopped my truck from going into overdrive or lock up converter whichever it was until I reached 43 mph at normal driving. This stopped my engine from chugging in town, and I actually gained power and fuel economy. It wasn't a cheap chip though and I also had the change to a cooler thremostat and slapped a K&N filter on it also.. That chip does perform, but like I said it wasn't a cheapy. Does anyone make a good chip for the malibu? I drive my car as an adult, but tuning it to perform better wouldn't bother me either. LOL It's kind of like the V-65 Magna bike I have. It's got goobs of power for a cruiser, but that doesn't mean you have to use it. It's just nice to know it's there if you feel the need ! LOL I have searched and never found a chip that I thought might really be worth buying for the bu yet. Any ideas? I really like this board.. So much good information here ! Thanks all.

Hpt is probably the best for the buck upgrade.. You can swap 3400's into the earlier malibus, with minimal modifications. For the 3100 Specifically there are some other mods you can do such as cai and exhaust. But you can probably pick up a used 3400 for 5-750 bucks and hpt is maybe 400, that might net you 200hp. From there you can aim for a turbo kit and keep right on going.
