EGR Valve Disable

Hi,

I have a 1983 Toyota Celica GT.
The car has a 2.4 liter engine only generating 105 hp.
I really would like to increase its hp or torque. (even a small amount of hp would help)
A friend of mine told me to disable the EGR valve. he said he did it in his GMC truck (which is very fast BTW).
Is it safe to do this? Even if it would only give me a little hp it would definetly help. I know it would run a little more gas.

Most EGR valves are vacuum actuated. So at wide open throttle, they won't function anyway.

its exactly the opposite, egr valves are closed at idle, and open in conjunction with throttle opening. also vacuum operated egr's have been replaced with digital egr's, on at least most late model GM's and probably others.

Gas fumes sounds right to me - in a gasoline engine, the point of EGR is to dilute the intake air at part load, to reduce part-load fuel consumption.
