Hello I'm trying to figure out a problem I'm having with my 2.3 Quad 4 dohc engine. It starts fine and is quiet but after a little while I'm getting what sounds like Valve or lifter chatter. It goes silent when I turn the steering wheel. I checked the power steering pump and the hex drive for it looks ok. I changed the oil to see if the previous owner put the wrong viscosity in it , no change. The Odometer reads 133000, but the previous owner claims the engine was replaced recently by the person who had the car before him. He only had it for a short time and never even registered it in his Name. Hopefully there is someone outthere who can help. Thank you

Welcome to AF.

Could be both lifter & vavle noise.
Quad 4's are typicly noisey to begin with.

Though so are these GM power steering pumps.

What wieght of engine oil are you using ?

5w 30 is whats recomended.

Most likly if the noise is bad and persistant,
not getting any quieter,
then I'd say its probly time for an rebuild on the head or valve train.

Thanks for the info. I was leaning towards rebuilding the heads or at least checking the cam housings and lifters myself. Thanks again
