Are motor oils considered a detergent oil? How is a oil classified as a detergent oil? What does the meets or exceeds SF,SL, etc. mean on the container. Thanks.

Detergents are cleaning additives which are added to all engine oils.

motor oil is not neceserally detergent but good luck finding one that isnt. far as oil rating its changed over th years and if you have oil thas under the old rating system dont put it in your new car but the other way around is alright.

Oil is generally classified by "S" for service, including cars and light trucks, and "C" for commercial applications (diesel). The API system is used for classification purposes, SA,SD,SG,SL,and the current SM. Each change to the next letter of the alphabet signifies a higher quality oil which meets standards for newer engines. To meet the API ratings , oil must meet certain standards for high temperature deposit control and low oil consumption, protection packages containing anti-wear properties, and oxidation stability. Also most oils now have the "Energy Conserving" label. If you use an oil rated lower on the scale in a newer engine, it can cause many problems, so make sure you check your owner's manual to see what the minimum rating is recommended for your vehicle, or purchase your oil from a reputable supplier who generally carries the most up-to-date classifications.
