88 pinging

hello again my truck was pinging nobody could answer why had it scanned everything alright some said carbon build up but i unplugged the ignition advance wire the brown one up by firewall and now it doesent ping at all of course check engine light is on could something mechanical in dist be bad any help would be great thanks

When you had it scanned what was the knock count? If it was pinging and the knock count was low, it can indicate a problem with the knock sensor.

I have also seen the harmonic balancer shift on hub resulting in the wrong timing being set.

What is the timing set at with the brown wire disconnected? Was is it at when the wire is connected at idle?
