turning signal

I have a 91 park avenue and th eother day the turning signal stop working at first i thought, okay easy fix, Just replace the silver cylinder shaped relay. Well thats where the problems starts. I guess with the 91 there are 2 relays one for the hazards and the other for the signals. I found the one for the hazards but i cant seem to find the one for the indicators. I called the dealer and they stated they could fix it for 390 dollars canadian i was like what. Its a relay, he stated that you have to take the steering wheel off and replace the multifunction unit. I find this hard to believe, i think he or maybe i was confusing him that it is not that the indictor doesnt return to the middle position after the turn, which it does. Anyways can some one help me locate the relay for the turning signals. So i dont have to manual click it when i make a turn, lol. I am just dumbfounded at this, why would it be so hard to find, for what is a 6 dollar part usually.

So what exaclty is happening?

When you put the turning signal on it just stays on, as you make your turn then it clicks off as you have completed our turn. If i put the hazards on they do blink. Just not when i use the indicator lever.

keeping it simple, you're sure all the exterior markers are working correctly?

The hazzards are independent for this reason FYI.

Additionally, both flashers should be mounted to the same bracket on the driver's side uderdash. :dunno:

Yes front and back turning lights do turn on, they just dont flash.

there is only one and it seems to be the hazards if i take it out the hazards dont work. the problem is trying to locate the flasher relay for the turning signal.

Then are you sure the turn signal flasher didn't get knocked out of it's socket and is on the floor somewhere? I don't think it would be any different on a Canadian model, but on the bulk of GM's of the day the 2 flashers are right next to each other. :dunno:

You might check your library to see if they carry the Shop Service Manuals in their reference section. Two of our local libraries do...they will usually tell you where to look for your flasher unit.

If your signal comes on, but doesn't flash...that almost always is due to a burned out light bulb. A standard duty turn signal flasher unit (which is usually yellow plastic, rather than silver metal, but still cylindrical) is going to indicate a burned out bulb by not flashing, but being on steady. If you happen to have a burned out bulb and replace the flasher with a heavy duty flasher (which is what the hazard flashers must use), then your signals will flash again, but you will also still have a burned out bulb.

Turn on your flashers, you should have one bulb on each side in the front flashing, plus two bulbs on each side in the rear flashing. If any one of them are out, it will cause the standard duty flasher to stay on steady when you use the turn signal for that side, but your heavy duty hazard flasher unit will not stop flashing. If your flashers are flashing all six lights, then it truly is your flasher unit.
