'97 front strut noise

I've just recently replaced both front end struts in my '97 prix gt. Strut plate looked fine along with the spring... However shortly after I started to notice a popping noise coming from both struts... Everything was properly lined up and to torque specs. I replaced them with the monroe strut and have read in prev. threads about them...after i bought em'. Is this just a crappy strut or should i start thinkn about replacing the ball joints and other components?

I'm not sure if this would be the cause, but I did a strut job on another car I had and it did the same thing. Turned out that even though the strut was tightened to the specs, once the car was set down on it, there was play at the top plate and I had to retighten the top bolt to tighten things down to correct specs. Good Luck, hope you find it and it doesn't require additonal repairs.

There is quite a history as you can see from other old posts about using Monroe brand struts. The complaint is a popping sound even though installation appears to be good. Some GP owners reverted back to the GM/OEM struts or other aftermarket like KYB.

The problem is not limited to just Grand Prixs as we get this complaint in other GM forums too.

Hey guys,
I recently placed a post about front strut noise. The for some time now I haven't heard a thing. Now the other day seemed to start hearing the popping again. I kneeled down next to the front driverside wheel well and put both hands on the spring--car not jacked up. Much to my suprise i could literally twist the spring about and 1/8". So I'm assuming when I'm making a turn and hear the noise it's the spring twistn'. Also under when driving cond. I don't hear it...assuming the water is lubricating the spring to rubber contact spot. Do I need to further tighten the nut from the stut on top of the tower?

Your new post has been merged with the old post since it was a recent issue. Try to keep similar issue posts with the original thread instead of starting a new one. It cuts down on confusion and possible redundant answers/replies.
