Extra tips to pass aircare?

I bought this 91 honda civic with low ks that I was aware had not passed aircare. I had a connection in chilliwack throught a friend to help pass but found out AFTER I bought the car that they had a falling out so now Im doomed. I took the car through today and they were making a fuss and then finaly came in and said that they couldnt put it through as there was an "excessive exhasut leak". So Im going to deal with that. Probably take it to a welder.

Either way, I know about driving it madly on the freeway and putting in methal before I go through. Those are a given.

My question is there are people who say changing the oil and filter can help. Or can I leave this. And the idle. Its low idle on my car. Should I have that highered before I go in? Im going to the abbotsford one. Im thinking langley after you guys tell me what to do with the car before I go through......

Ok, after rereading your post i think i got the jist of it.

Before getting it smogged or "aircared" definitely change the oil and filter and possibly do a full tune up, including o2 sensor and PCV valve. Go to a muffler shop and get your exhaust fixed. Be sure to check your ignition timing and have it set at 16 degrees past TDC.

Do you know of the HC CO and NOx values of the car? If you have high HC or CO, then the next time run your car longer to heat up the cat. This will help lower HC and CO. Worst case scenario you need to replace your cat.

If you have high NOX on the other hand, your combustion temps are too high and you are either running too rich, too hot(insufficient cooling), or timing is too far advanced. You can try retarding timing in this case or taking in your car on a cooler day (trust me this helped cure my NOx problem). Good luck.

move to a state without yearly inspections. :grinyes:

the weather is good here in SC.
several big colleges around here so lots of hot co-eds.
couple of beaches and mountains within a few hours drive.

depends on where the exhaust leak was coming from... take it to a muffler shop and get them to take a look at it... is not usually very expensive to get your exhaust patched.... as for the rest... just make sure the engine and the catalytic converter are good and warm (drive around for 30minutes or so before going to get inspected), an oil change and new engine air filter before the inspection will help lower HC's, high octane gas, and a good EGR valve, and a new fuel filter helps with NOX, a good o2 sensor, catalytic converter helps with O2, CO, HC, and CO2... off the top of my head, I can't think of anything else that might help.. but if I do, I'll post it up.

Smog testing is going to be mandatory in all states by 2010. :icon16:

At least you all don't live in Cali. The smog laws are so strict here that I have to get hookups most of the time.

Killa_CRX gave some good points. If its something you can't handle, have the shop inspect it for you. They should be able to tell you what is needed. Then if you think you can do the work yourself or have someone else do it, it'll be cheaper. Well I don't know the price in Vancouver since I hear its really expensive city to live in. Does your car have a check engine light?

That is right. Aircare is MANDATORY here in the lower fraser valley. But go to Hope which is what 25 minutes away, and your home free. AAAUGGGHHH.

Well I just got back from Aircare and passed with flying colours. What I did was found a place that does welding to replace part of the exhaust pipe that had rust on it. Then got a cheap muffler and had the shop install that as well at the same time. CHEAP.

Every other shop I showed the car to before this last one wanted me to replace the WHOLE EXHAUST frome the cat back INCLUDING budget. (MONSTERS:shakehead )

THEN I took it to MOHAWK put in the 94 then dumped another bottle of the meth in (case remember I had just taken it through aircare yesterday) and tore onto the freeway for 10 minutes, and in the air car little line kept the revs up. I was worried about my idle when I went through because it was very low to the point of almsot stalling. But I decided Id go for it rather than have it adjusted. I didnt need to worry. I barely got a reading on that. It was a 0.04.

NOW im selling it. Time to move on. Gotta Honda for sale. :grinyes:

Because that also can effect your emissions. Unless its different where you're at.

Cars 95 and older does not matter if a CEL is on. All that matters is the car passes the sniffer test. I'm a licensed saftey and emissions inspector so I know a good bit about that stuff.
