too much oil

hi does anyone know if too much oil can cause engine to miss as i bought a renault espace rxe 2.8 on a 93 plate last night and it doesnt seem to be firing on all cylinders i went to check the oil and the dipstick has been broken for what looks like a while , the person i bought it from said that he had just changed the oil so i think he has put too much in , there is also a bit of white smoke when starting the car , any help would be very welcome thank you michael
