Clutch?

95 Wrangler SE 5 speed.
Having problems getting the Jeep in gears one and two. It will go in gears three four and five with no problem. It is like it cant go into gear because something is holding it up. I dont know if it is the clutch because with the car off, without using the clutch, it still DOES NOT slip into gear like it should. In my 97 with the car off, without pushing in the clutch, I still can still slip into gear with no problem. In the 95 with the car on it is really hard to get into those gears, when you work on it a little you can wedge/slip it in, same thing with the car off. This makes me believe it may not be the clutch but something with the shift linkage.

Does anyone have any ideas what this may be. Gear linkage, clutch etc.?
Anytime I had a clutch go on me previous, it would just completly go on me and the pedal would easily go to the floor. That is not happening now. Pedal feels exactly the same.

i had the same problem. it would be ok for about 20 mins of driving, then if i stopped and put it in first it would sometimes not go into gear. i didnt want to force it cuz i didnt wanna break anything, but i had to shut it off, put it into gear, and then start up and take off. i put a new clutch in mine and its been great ever since. my 94 has a 97 tranny in it, which has a different clutch fork setup. its sorta like a pivot thing. it has a little clip on the other end of the fork, which i discovered was broken, and probably caused the whole problem in the first place..the 2 dollar clip.

Thanks for the reply Phish, I am not sure exactly what it ended up being but we went ahead and found a used tranny on ebay for $400. New clutch and flywheel and it is running like a champ. A quick inspection of the old tranny showed some gear breaking! Litterally some broken teeth of the gears inside the tranny, like I said not sure exactly where the problem lied but it is all good now. BTW, the tranny swap was much easier than I anticipated, If you ever need to swap one out, give it a try. Not that big of a deal.

glad you got it fixed, lol ive never swapped a tranny but ive had it out to put the clutch in. the clutch took about 20 mins and was very easy. i snapped the heads off 3 grade 8 bolts getting the skid plate off though, i wasnt even using an impact. that was a major pain in the ass. lucklly my best friends dad is a mechanic and he welded new nuts inside the frame and got it goin again.

I have had problems with manual transmissions doing this before that were low on fluid or had the wrong fluid. Have you checked the fluid? The tranny fluid being low will cause this exact problem in a manual transmission.
