2001 Eclipse GS speed sensor

my spedometer stops working when i drive about 5 miles after cranking up the car.

my guess is that i have a bad speed sensor or cable.

is this something that i can replace myself or would i need to take the car to a shop? if it's the latter, around how much should i be looking to spend?
