Got some questions about engine differences

1)If the SR20DE only made 150hp in the S13, and 160hp in the S14, then why is it so much better than the KA when the KA puts out 155?
2)If u threw a turbo on the KA, then wouldnt u be around 205-220 range just like the SR's in the S13 or S14 (Except u get to pick exactly the turbo u want and kit)?
3)Wouldnt the KA produce way more than 203 torque? (Somewhere in the 220-230 range)
I was bored the other day so I read the 16 pg. "best engine thread" and it got me thinking.

1. actually the SR20DE makes less hp than that. closer to 145. but the advantages the SR has are many.
-smaller stroke makes for higher revs(SR is 86mm bore x 86mm stroke, KA is 89mm bore x 96mm stroke)
-aluminum block is lighter weight
-better designed combustion chamber
-most importantly, extra beefy forged crank, huge forged rods stock, and forged pistons stock.
that said, both are old design motors and both have their own downfalls and advantages.
the ka24 has a decent crankshaft with a large beefy girdle, forged and shotpeened rods stock(smaller than SR rods though), and even though it has a longer stroke, that just limits revs more than anything. you can still make plenty of power. and the iron block is super strong.
2. turboing a KA is more complex than just throwing one on, plus the higher displacement makes for a different power delivery and flow requirements for the turbo. you generally will have more power than an SR20 though.
3. yes the KA will make more torque with a similar setup, but again its more complicated than that.

you can just throw on your own kit if you have a decent running motor, people are running 3-400 hp on stock blocks. The key to the ka is a GOOD TUNE. Yea there is more stuff to buy for the ka initially, but if you budget right you come out around the same as a STOCK sr20 comes out to be, but you'll have a better overall system. You'll make more power and have all aftermarket stuff. Plus you have to buy almost all the same stuff for the sr as you would with the ka to make either engine worth a damn to begin with......fmic,injectors,turbo,intake,bov, manifolds etc. Plenty of parts available, and more and more people are coming out of the woodwork to support the ka.
Wait until a decent intake manifold(AMS) is made for the ka, that should help out the up top power band along with midrange....which is already the ka's main use. The up top is only going to make it that much sweeter.

Dude, I was seriously thinking about going RB. I graduate in June from college and the folks said they would get me a car when I graduate. I was looking into what car to get around the 20k price range and they all suck for 20k, u gotta go into the 35k's for anything I actually like.
Sooo, I was gonna pick up a 97-98 240 for about 10k, at most, and use the other 10k to go RB. But its gonna be a pain in the ass to get all the other necessary parts, maintenance issues, etc.
So instead of going RB, I was gonna KA-T it with the Greddy kit for $3600 w/ the fmic option. With the kit and fmic, its already been dynoed at 220hp/250tq. I know its not RB put out but not bad for at least 5k less and hassle free. I was planning on getting 550cc injectors to replace the ones that come on the kit, 255 l/hr walbro fuel pump, and then going to JWT for the ecu for another 700. With the other 5k, most likely a coilover set and big brake upgrade for start.
So, 20k, for a car I want and its rear wheel drive.
What u think, decent setup or no? Anything else you would change/upgrade on the turbo kit?

1) you cant find a car you like for 20k?!
2) you have some nice (rich) parents.
3) dude for 20k, you could build one HELL of a ka. you shouldnt have too much trouble finding an s14 for less than 10k. and even if you end up spending 10k on the car, that other 10k is a good amount of money to spend on parts. a real good amount. id go ka :2cents:

lol for 20k ill sell you my kouki its turbo and should dyno around 350whp when im done.. lol
seriously, if you go ka-t keep the greddy stuff, tune the emanage its capable, or upgrade to and emu. its alot better. get bigger injectors and a pump like you stated turn the boost up to around 14psi and tune the emanage and you'll be making easy 300+whp.
id go rb if i did it again.. but then again thats me..

lol.
Don't buy the Greddy kit. that shit is shady.
RB maintence isn't that hard. everything has a US PN or is imported unless you're gonna blow it up once a week.
KAs suck. If I could get a 500hp KA for 10$ I still wouldn't do it because it sounds and feels like piss to drive.

Whats up RW!? Guess u'll be out of here soon, again.
Anyways, I was thinking about the RX7, like a 93-94 ish just cuz I like those years. But in the end, 240 is still my fave.
And no parents aren't rich its just that my bro got my current car, brand new, when he got into college. Ever since then, they told all of us, bros and sis, that when we get into college we're getting new cars. Well, I really dont wanna settle for a brand new scion, or civic, or cobalt, or any other 20k dollar brand new car. So I figure go used and turbo it. Might as well be a 240...

First of all, Im graduating already so if they were rich, they would of got it for me when I started college not when Im finishing it.
Second of all, my sis went to dental school so it didnt cost them that much for the school or her 200sx.
Third, my other bro kinda fucked up and dropped out of college before they could get him a car.
Fourth, since Im the youngest I kinda got the left over and got stuck in the period where my parents have all the bills to pay back. My mom said I could take over the payments on her 99' 528i, which was like 5g's left, but its kinda old and my bro crashed it pretty bad so I didnt want that. My dad said I could have the 00' ML 320 but that shit drives like a fucking box so I passed on that too. So, I decided to settle on a Nissan of my choosing. Im just saying that I did what I was supposed to do and now they're supposed to hold up their part of the bargain.
P.S. I didnt have a car till 2 yrs. after I graduated hs. I had to walk to the j.c.

1)a 5 series that my bro nearly totaled when he was drunk driving and put 17k of damage on, including the chassis, but the insurance company decided it wasnt totaled so they fixed it.
2)have u ever driven a ml 320? seriously? worst fuckin car i have ever driven. I cant go from a 240 to a box.
3)my pops on disability cuz of his knee, prob. forever, and my mom has a decent job.
4)Brat? please...if they had enough dough to get my bro a brand new 17k car back in 93, then they should have enough to get me a used 10k car in 07. Plus, my parents bought a house in so. cal, where i live still, over 35 years ago, never been remortgaged (<sp). The house has a lot of equity in it. SO, they're gonna remortgage so my pop can retire and get me a car.

yea for 20k the only thing i can even think of thats decent to buy "performance" wise would be a srt-4. But thats fwd......
the only thing i think your parents may have a problem about is just giving you straight up 10 grand cash to spend on the car.......
think about it, are they going to straight out PAY for the new car(20k cash) or make monthly payments(a shit load more affordable)......thats not hard to pay for with a 20k car(probably be around 200-300 a month). Hell i do that and mod my 240 at the same time. I mean is it like they have 20 grand to toss away at hand currently? THen i would say your parents are well off if they've done that to 3 kids and payed for there colleges.
I would say get a new car that you can just cruise along and have reliable then mod the 240 while your at it(because it WILL be down). I mean fuck dude, thats a free brand new car basically. I dont think you understand how nice that would be. Me buying ALL my own shit. If my parents bought me my scion, then fuck dude my 240 would be waaaaay more baller(my rims would actually have offset!!!). But at the same time, i need a daily cruiser while i work on the 240. Plus you get that great thing called a warranty!!!!! Its nice having a new car man.

i mean seriously dude think about this logically. You just graduated college, therefore your probably going to land a decent job somewhere making ok cash. Let your parents buy the new car and worry about the monthly payments(huge pita that you dont have to worry about now). WHile you save up and buy the 240. You will have NO payments on the 240 it will be YOURS. Then everything from there on would be mod money. I mean thats how i would do it if given the chance to get a free brand new car. I know having a badass 240 is very much wanted. But if you want it bad enough you will have it in time. And trust me man, with a nice paying job, you will get ALOT of 240 parts quick. Alot of the stuff isnt really that expensive. Its the baller wheels, manifolds, coils, electronics and body mods that cost alot. All the other little shit is relatively cheap. 2-300 dollar range....suspension arms, intakes, bov, wastegates etc.

my parents still wouldnt put a dime towards my education or car ownership. theyre just cheap. they arent all that bad off, just cheap. plus i was the first kid in my fam to graduate HS, and first to go to college. i didnt finish yet but neither have my brother and sister.
oh btw im teh middle child, and i started college after my younger brother graduated HS.
i took a year off after HS and it was a good choice. i got a full time job, had my own place and a nearly new 11k car. now things have gone down hill from there but im not here to tell you my life story. point is, get a good reliable car from your parents. dont try and have a 240sx project thats your daily driver. it doesnt work all that well. save your money so you can buy one as a second car, pay cash for it, and use your money to upgrade that and maintain your daily driver.

The new Sentra SE-R starts at $19,400 and the Spec V at $19,900. You can also get a Subaru Impreza 2.5i for under $20K as well. Sure, they may be a little ugly, but if you hurry, you can geet one before they get REALLY UGLY for '08. (http://www.subaru.com/sub/misc/2008/autoshow/ny0311/impreza25i/index.html)
