98 GTP won't start

70,000 miles, never had a problem. I was out this morning, started and ran just fine. Got back in a few hours later to go out, when I turned the key my hand slipped (guess I didn't hold it long enough for it to start.) It started for second the stopped. When I tried again, same thing keeps happening - starts for a few seconds then dies. I let it sit for 30 minutes longer, tried again, but got the same thing (except maybe it ran a few seconds longer before dying.) Any ideas?

You may have a bad fuel pump resistor which is keeping fuel pressure low. Try bypassing the fuel pump resistor which is a common problem in GTPs. See link below.

Thx. Later when I tried it did not even fire up for a few seconds, and I ended up having it towed to a service center. Once they got it it started right up.

I assume if the resistor was bad that it would not be intermittent, correct? Does it sound more like a fuel pump problem, like it froze, then being moved around during the tow started working again?

It varies. Best way to test for a bad fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator to include electrical problems like fuel pump relays is to hookup an automotive fuel pressure tester at the Schrader valve located on the front fuel injection rail. Specs are 48-55 psi.

I'd check your IAC too. Maybe your MAF. Is it throwing any codes? When my IAC went bad I got no codes. I ended up just pulling it out, cleaning it off with a wire brush, compressing it to it's normal size and I was done. It took ten minutes. If it's your MAF, just go buy a can of electrical parts cleaner from Radio Shack, pull pull out the MAF, spray it off with the cleaner, let it dry and put it back in. Do you have an oiled air filter?
