I guess they ride on the sidewalks in Tokyo because their streets are so narrow. In the US we're supposed to ride in the street, so people give you dirty looks and don't get out of your way if you're on the sidewalk. Japanese people are so polite.

More than likely here in the states someone would stick something in your spokes while you were riding. not that I'd do that.
