Iat Sensor / Cold Air Intake

Hi, I have one simple question for your performance guys? what is better for IAT sensor to register cold or underhood temperature air? I just instaled one of those mushroom type filters :) and do not know what to do with my IAT sensor that is left inside of the original air-filter housing. should I take it out and leave it somewhere to register temperature under the hood or should I be creative and extend IAT sensor wires and put it somewhere where it will register colder air :) maybe my PCM will go :screwy: if I do that

The IAT needs to be inside the air intake to read the incoming air temps to calibrate for fuel mixture.

Either its original spot or you can extend the wires and put it furthur down stream in the CAI. Probly should solder the wires and use shrink tubing to keep the connections dry.

Just remember you dont want it to get wet either.

I thought about moving my IAT down my cold air intake to get cooler air but I wanna try and save gas lol... I left it in the stock location....

But, what you could to do help is a throttle body coolant bypass .. I just did this, pretty easy task.. you can buy rubber plugs or w/e that slip over the fittings easy and some tiny clamps for them so the coolant doesnt leak out...

also if you can find it, the heat shield that pfyc.com offers or does... not sure if its still up,

its a shiny small piece of metal but it does "work" and works nice with the coolant bypass on the throttle body....

my IAT stays around 75F just cruising :D

Hey Gir, it reall doesnt matter if the IAT is further down in the CAI. It just gets a more accurate temp reading on outside air.

With it in the normal location ut picks up radiant heat from the engine & exhaust manifold. That plate will help but not enough to justify PFYC price on that.
You could use about any piece of metal(preferably stainless), maybe even put some heat tape around it.

Your IAT should read the same temps as it is outside.

What youre thinking of is that IAT resistor which makes your car think its 32Deg which will make it use more fuel :shakehead

well yea, I just ment as in what you just said lol... more cooler accurate read... I get 75F just fine after the engine has warmed up to 185F

btw, changed my oil yesterday, ... it was long due... smelt like I was working on a lawnmower, the oil was pretty thin and broken down/dirty :grinno: but I put a full 5qt jug in there and it came to perfectly full :dunno:

but eh, my engine tone got louder and it feels like it was to go even faster hahaa :D .... running it hard wastes so much gas :(

and I only fill up with shell 93oct, w/ the cleaner in the gas, my milage has been going up slowly, well untill I put on the throttle body lol... I get about 20-25mpg or something like that... I still need to clibrate my gauge :D

Thank you guys, I think I will try to put it as close to the exhaust manifold as possible to save some gas. Just kidding. :)

I will try to install it somewhere outside where it will not get wet. Any recomendations for that? Maybe inside of the bumper?

fine in the stock placement I think lol

IMO the best place is right before the fender or inside the fender after the bend in the CAI pipe.

It wont work right if you just stick it any where,
like in the bumper :grinno:
It has to be inside the air intake tube :grinyes:

I do recommend that you solder the wires and use shrink tubing to prevent any corrosion on the wires.
It'll save head aches down the road.

Thank you guys for your help, now I have something interesting for you. Whith this you can make your GA's think it is freezing cold outside in the middle of the summer :) check this out http://kingenterprises.net/IAT-Timing-Tricker.htm let me know what you think
according to this site you can gain 5-20 horses

in short all you need is to instal resistor depending on the temperature you want instead of your IAT sensor. And your PCM will always read the same resistance = same temperature (not a bad trick)

yea and say bye bye to your gas milage :disappoin

Its junk unless you like getting 12-15mpg and little or no gains in HP. :grinno:

i would leave the IAT where it is, your not going to get anymore power out of the car, and moving it is only going to fake the computer into thinking your getting colder air, the IAT should be closer to the TB rather then further

i haveone of those stupid things in replace of my sensor, i have not noticed a single difference in horse power or fuel mileage, like he said get that filter ant tubing in the quarter panel behind the fog light, there you will recieve the most power. if you are looking for a small mileage gain go get one of those stpid tornadoes, those actually work.

it's junk. Your computer will deliver un-optimal fueling for the motor. people tend to think oh well more fuel means more horsepower!? losers.

No problem guys, I gave up on IAT sensor modifications, I think I saw something in All data if I am not mistaking that somehow IAT controls purge solenoid. PCM sees certain temp etc....... opens purge ...

I saw what XI did with his mufler headers, cool stuff, I am not ready for new headers but I was thinking to graduly build my exhaust system. This is what I am planning to do now you tell me if this is possible. I want new 4" exhaust pipe and CAT from 5.7L camaro and resonator of the same diameter. Later I will get headers custom made with same diameter. It is possible to do something like that and yes place will be tight under the hood. But will I have any problems with O2 sensors since CAT will be much bigger. Thanks in advance, almost left this one no mufler just straight flow resonator. Then headers custom made, cut valve seats (bigger) + bigger valve heads = big mouth and big a.. :) works better.

you can imagine what woud oversize pistons do on top of all this. for 3.1l

Glad you didnt get that gas & money grubing device.

The 4" might be overkill, unless you are running a drag car.
Mine is 3" down to the Cat flange then 2.5" all the way back. To big and you loose back pressure which can create problems with a stock engine.

Good Luck with your Mods.

If you intend on keeping the car all motor, 2.5inches will be plenty for your needs. You'll have enough velocity to keep things moving out the ass end quickly. 3inch will probably be a tad bit too big.

side note

you're not looking for back pressure. what you're looking for is keeping the velocity of the exhaust stream up. if the exhaust is too small it turns into a bottleneck, yes high velocity but too much back pressure, stifling the efficiency of the motors ability to crap out the exhaust. You need to size the exhaust plumbing just right so that you keep the velocity of the exhaust gasses high and the backpressure low.
