2001 5.4 miss

When I was picking up the kids today from Sunday school my 2001 super crew started running rough. It acted like the distributor cap was wet, this pickup doesn't have one but if my old 83 pickup acted this way, the cap is what I would check, especially with the weather being cold and wet today. At idle the engine shakes and misses and when accelerating it gets worse until you get some rpms. No check engine light. I started unplugging injectors and those coil packs. The second one on the drivers side did not seem to change the engine so I pulled off the coil pack and the spark plug was sitting in water. I then blew out the water and pulled the spark plug and it looked real good, not black or wet. I also removed the first coil and spark plug from the passenger side and swapped with the ones on the drivers side. I applied some dielectric grease to the coil boots to help keep out the water. The engine seemed to run allot better so I went out for a drive and it started getting worse and worse again. If you really step on the gas the check engine light will flash, and for awhile the light was going back out after you let off the gas, but now it just stays on steady, not flashing. I unplugged the injector for that cylinder (second one on drives side) again and it does not change the engine again. Did I get to much grease in the boot? I hope so.

Wash the engine lately ?
If not you might have hit some water like I did and you probably have another one on the drivers side with water.

My 4.6 has had water in the rear one 3 times since 2002 and had to replace the COP and plug each time.

Did you pull the boot off of the COP when you took it off ? It's probably rusted all over the bottom of the spring. I tried to save one once by cleaning it with electrical cleaner and using Dielectric grease on it as well, lasted a month before it went out.

Good Luck,

I must first warn you are dealing with a moron, I was unplugging the second injector and finding no engine change but removing the third coil.
I have not washed the engine, but you are right, all four on the drivers side had water in them. Did not have any that the coil and plug where rusted together though just blew out the water and checked the plug. Runs pretty darn good now. Thanks!
