local SHO advert local

Hello gang. WHile cruising our local online listings as I like to do. I found this interesting SHO .It's a bit old but cheap. Of note is the use of a 3.0L motor instead of the original. Do any of you think this is a decent deal or should I totally ignore it due to the 'non-standard' motor?? I've always like the look of the SHO and in particular the use of a standard trans.

Well, for that price, I think you could find a similar first or second generation SHO with the original Yamaha 3.0L. I'd be curious to know how many miles were on the original engine when it spun the bearing. Those engines are quite reliable from a mechanical standpoint. Unless it was a really high mileage engine, I'd suspect poor maintenance or abnormal abuse to cause a spun bearing.

That being typed, it won't hurt for you to go take a look at it. That way you can get a feel for the condition of the car and if it something you are interested in anyway. That way you won't always be wondering what you passed up.

Thanks for the reply SHOROD. I was curious about the use of the 3.0L motor in a SHO. I would assume that the ECM would be doing it's thing based on the original motor being there.

Yeah, it would be interesting to know if they used the original PCM from the SHO, or the PCM from the "new" engine. If from the new one, I wonder what it thinks about the transmission being a manual. I believe there was still a tie between the PCM and the automatic transmission in 1989.... That was nearly before my time. :)

Well, I managed to take a look at this SHO today and was pleasantly surprised. It's owned by a mature man who's had it for 2 years. The body & paint is about a 7 out of 10 with no rust. The interior has the usual wear on the leather with a rip in the passenger seat and a rip in the rear seat but not serious. It also has a working sunroof that doesn;t leak. He's replaced all 4 struts and the lower control armns & tie rods. He also has a recent SHO clutch and all the power windows & seat works. It has the stock latice rims with decent tires. The car drives surprisingly well with no front shimmy or pulling. The steering is tight. The transmission shifts slick. It's black with grey interior.

The electronic locks don;t work but he has the module.Also, the power antenna deosn;t and there's no AC . He wants $1400 and says he's spent $1200 since Jan. I think I'll offer $1100 right after my wife beats the crap outta me.

Now...does anyone want to buy a nice Subaru?

Man, I tell ya, I'm curious how that worked too. I guess a regular 3.0 bolts up to the tranny fine? Anyway, if you want to give the car its name back, and you want a hobby / project to do for the summer, there are plenty of used 3.0 SHO motors around. If ya need a hand feel free to email me if and when you get 'stuck'. :)

Thanks for the offer of help.I'm sure I'll need some! the vulcan conversion used a ECU from a ford ranger standard and it runs very well, although the idle is a bit high. The drivers power lock is duffed but all the others work fine even when using the electronic lock. Then again what can you expect for $1100??

THe vulcan bolted right up to the trans . Apparently it's all good, 30,3.8 and even the supercharged engine from a t-bird works. The original engine is here it needs some lower end bearings and it should be good to go.I also have the original ECU and harness..woot.

Did the engine actually spin a bearing? Mine did, and thats when I opted for a new short block. Took forever to find. :) The one that spun... number 5 if i remember right, I put the standard size in and there was a little too much play in it. So I knew then the crank would have to be turned to have it last for a while. And actually, why don't you poke around and find one that's been wrecked? Motor, and tranny would come right out. :) You would have your harness and everything. Good luck on whatever you decide.
