I Have A Check Engine Light On My 2000 Toyota Tacoma 3.4l V6. I Recently Took My Tacoma For An Emissions Inspection And It Failed. The Diagnostic Report Listed A Fault Code And Description Of P0420 (catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (bank 1). I Was Told That It Was A Very Good Possibility That My Tacoma Is In Need Of A New Catalytic Converter. Please Confirm.

Could be cat, or 02 sensor.

p0420 = catalyst below efficiency = needs cat and probably some 02 sensors too.

covered under 8yr/80k mile emission warranty

cats and o2's...very possible. look for a leak in the exhaust gaskets at the cat and check your o2's. pretty common for tacomas that the o2 studs rust and break off leaving your o2 just sitting there and even dangling not even in the pipe. any sort of air leak will cause your o2 sensors not to read properly and set this code

ya i just got one of those codes 2 or 3 weeks ago at work my boss said just to change the cat but it came back in throwing the same code so we changer the O2 sensor and that did it
