ECU tuning

I have almost no knowledge of ECU tuning, programmers, chips, or all this stuff. I know that it is possible to have your ECU computer to allow more air fuel mixture and things to be alter for more power. But I just want to know is this possible on our cars? A lot of the tuning I read about were all on TT models, but not N/A. If so then what are good companies for me to look into becuase I am interested. thanks

Unfortunately there is very little available for our cars in the ECU department because it it not flashable. Turbo Bob over on 3si can take your ECU and change it to raise the rev limit but thats about the extent of it. You need either a piggy back or stand alone to do any real tuning.

Oh really? Wow, has there been anything really done to our ECUs ever? My friend sent his chip in to some preformance shop in Sacramento (1994 TransAm), and he said he got nearly 30 horsepower. Maybe I can find someone who can change the codes, thanks anyway.

you don't understand. our ECUs cannot be altered b/c they are not flashable. this means that no chip can be added. the only options you have for tuning are piggyback computers that modify the ECU signals (SAFC, Greddy E-manange). or you could get a completely standalone Engine management system (EMS) by AEM.

Oh ok, yeah I didn't quite get what he meant by that. Ill look into the ECM by AEM. thanks.

unless you have a TT, there's no reason to look into an AEM. as i recall, you have a NA DOHC?
a piggyback like a AFC (air flow converter) should fill all your needs. A'pexi makes several: SAFC, SAFC II, SAFC Neo. HKS makes one called the S-AFR. but if you still need more tuning options, then the Greddy E-manage (Blue or Ultimate) would be more than enough. the AEM EMS is just overkill for an NA car. plus, you would spend weeks learning the software just to be able to get the car to idle.

if your an N/A and want more power, use that money to buy a downpipe, upgraded clutch and flywheel, and a testpipe. Or just save up to either do a TT conversion, or sell your car and buy a TT. There is nothing you can do to our ECU's besides raise the rev limiter as said before. About the best you can do is get an air/fuel controller, hook your car up to a wideband and lean it out as it runs rich anyways, you could pick up a few hp out of that, but not 30.

OKay thanks, yeah I plan on selling it eventually after doing some small upgrades, but I suppose the ECU tuning should be last on my list, thanks.
