1998 Cherokee Rear End Noise Help

I Drive A 1998 Cherokee Classic 4x4, Automatic Trans., 4.0l, Dana 35 Rear End.

Recently I Have Noticed A Loud Humming/bearing Type Noise From The Rear End. It Mostly Starts After I Make A Right Turn, Then The Noise Is There Until I Either Let The Jeep Sit For A While.

I Also Found That If I Spin The Rear Tires(like In The Snow Or Mud) It Makes The Noise Go Away.

The Noise Happens At All Speeds. Sometimes It's When I'm Accelerating, Then Sometimes It Will Do It While Coasting Or Braking.

I Pulled The Diff Cover Off. There Were No Metal Shavings, All The Gears Looked Good, The Fluid Is Changed Regularly.

Does Anyone Have Any Ideas? It Just Seems Weird That The Noise Comes And Goes, And That A Hard Right Turn Seems To Make The Noise Start.

Any Input Would Be Appreciated.

CHeck your axle bearings, more so the one on the right shaft. Is the noise responcive to speed? Faster you go the louder it gets? DO you have a lift on this, tire size?

Thanks For The Reply. The Noise Is Related The To Vehicle Speed. The Faster I Go The Faster The Noise Goes. Sometimes It Gets Louder With Noise, And Sometimes The Noise Gets Faster.

It Is A Very Unusual Noise Especially Since It Comes And Goes. The Tire Size Is 235 75 15. I Do Not Have A Lift Kit.

I believe your model still had the drum brakes, chech the backing plate for signs of gear oil leaking from the axle tubes. Next the other option is kind of risky, but doable. Place the rear axle on some Good jack stands. Have a buddy start the jeep and engage the tranny to drive, be careful when doing this, as too much and the axles will twist. Once the tires are rotating take a long extention or solid metal bar and use it as a stethascope, listening from one side to the other , trying to pin-point the niose source.

Start with the axle bearing. Jack the jeep up....a lift would be better.

Get under it and use a long big screwdriver or stethescope to listen for noise, with a partner to run the vehicle at the speed you need.

That way you can isolate the noise to the side or differential area.

Be careful if you are doing this at home.

I hear humming and pulsing noice in the rear of my 1998 Cherokee Laredo.

The car shop used stethoscope and said it comes from the differential.

They changed oil in differential, because they said a regular oil change will not reach the differential, and indeed, the disposed oil was deep black color, much darker than from a regular oil change.

Still, this did not help to reduce the pulsing noise. It pulses about 1 time per second at ~25 mph and more frequent at higher speed. At freeway speed I cannot hear it, probably because of surrounding noise.

Finally, the shop owner said it's a common condition in Jeep's, and cannot be eliminated.

My concern is that it sounds like some rotating part is misaligned and is wearing away unevenly.

I would appreciate any ideas, thoughts.
