Anyone know if I have to get a programmed key to start my car? Or will any key that is cut to fit work.

Honda doesn't use resistor keys that I'm aware of...that was a GM thing...

A VATS key has a resistor built in where it touches contacts inside the lock cylinder.
You don't have something like that, do you?

My car came with 1 regular black key and 1 grey valet key. I assume you lost both. You should be able to get a key through any dealer with the VIN, name, etc... for a small fee of course.

I'm lost...how does it read it, signal from the transmitter?
Oh...that reminds me. My mom bought a new CR-V and it came with two transmitter keys and one without...is that the valet key you spoke of? What purpose does it serve?
I missed something, obviously..

I'm not fully sure of the science behind it. From what I remember from the dealer schpiel the chip in the key head sends a signal to a chip in the starter before it will start the car. If you start up a 6+ gen you'll see a little green key icon light up in the guages.
The valet key will start the car but won't open the glove compartment or trunk release.

Ahh...OK...that makes sense.
We noticed too with the CR-V if you walk away with the transmitter key, the doors lock...passive security...

I had a breakin and a bunch of keys were taken. I still have one remote key and 1 valet which starts the car but has not visable chip that I see. That fancy little remote key costs BIG bucks at the dealer (well over $100). You can buy on Ebay for about half what the dealer wants, but apparently they or a good locksmith has to program it to start the car.

There is a ring in the ignition lock that senses the chip in the key. This ring send a signal to ECU that this key is the right one. You will not be able to start your car without the right key. The dealer can reprogram your your ECU for a different set of keys.
But you all know dealer prices!!!

Well, not all of them.
My son's 95 does not have one.
Mine 99 does have it. And I would say that I do not like it at all: it is very expencice if you need a replacement, even thought it gives you some security.

Not enough security. The accord is one of the most stolen cars of the last decade... I gotta get my alarm fixed :uhoh:

My 93 Accord Tenth Anniversary Edition had a remote for alarm and door locks and engine start. It was lost sometime ago and now I would like to at least program my power lockes. Can anyone help? I have called Honda and they tod me they do not make the remote anymore for the car, so now I just want to get a generic remote to at least unlock the car remotely for my daughter. Thanks

Youre gonna have to get a new alarm or keyless entry system for the car if Honda can't help you get a new key fob. The stock system can be uninstalled when they put in the new

Is this something I can do myself? Can I install a 3rd party system to the module ?

From what I remember. In order to get a new set of keys you'll need the 1st and 2nd key so they can cut and reprogrammed at the dealer for very low price. That is if only you wanted an extra key.
I have an issue on Ford Windstar where I lost all my keys. I had to have the van towed to the dealer and install all new ignition system, trunk and door key holes and get new set of keys and also reprogrammed. Cost me over $1000.
Accord has chips little chip in the key I believe since 98 model to now. I have 2000 Accord and the key is very small. Yes and it does have chip in it.
The valet (usually grey) is for well valet parkers. It can only access doors and ignition, not trunk. It also has chip in it but slightly different teeth. So you can lock your personal items in there without having to worry about bad valet parkers.
