84 Monte rebuild project/intro

Hello all and hello AF,

Finally got a budget together with a small crew and launched into rebuilding my "baby".

She is a 1984 midnight black Monte Carlo with ss exaughst, t-tops, and a 305.

I have had the car for going on probably 10 years now. I originally took it off the road as I did not want to tear it up driving it back and forth to work. Unfortunately, as such things tend to go, time dragged on and on with no money, tools, or budget for giving her the attention she needed, plus, I am not exactly a pro when it comes to car maintainance or storage for that matter. So essentially the car has been sitting for a VERY long time.

I will post some pics of her in her prime when I get the chance, though the current condition photos may earn me some flames.

So anyway, since begining (finally) the rebuild/fix er up project, I figured it would not hurt to find a community of folks who may know a thing or two about rebuilding and eventually making a car into an outright show quality ride.

The "crew" of rebuilders consists of
myself-limited repair experience (oil changes, starter replacment, alternator replacment, etc.:eek:
My project lead "car guy" I know from work (friend of mine)-extensive experience rebuilding engines, working on older cars, etc etc
another friend from work who has less experience than me but is interested in helping out and learning.

We have some contacts locally who have already helped when we were trying to figure out how to remove the (and this is where my lack o knowledge will show, I will try to avoid such terms as "that thingy" as often as possible but no promises) timming post/gear? The part which the distributer cap and rotor attatch to.

So we have gotten it stripped down pretty good at this point, yesterday we got the carb pulled as well as the intake manifold. (Along with more hoses, emissions stuff, and strange looking parts than I can keep track of. Thankfully my lead mechanic does not suffer from this condition)

So thats me, my intro, and what I am up to. I thought about posting this in the classic chevy section, but was not sure if 84' was old enough, especially with some vintage 70's posts there. If I had gotten my hands on the 71 monte carlo I wanted originally, it may have been a diff story, but oh well.

At any rate, I love what I have read so far here, and look forward to being a part of the community :D

God, it's hard for me to fathom an '84 Monte as being "old" :lol: . I remember seeing ads for these cars when they were new, and seeing them on the dealer's lots.
One piece of advice I would add would be if you had access to a digital camera,use it. I wish I had one all those years ago when I rebuilt and customized the cars that I did. It helps to take pictures before you disassemble something, and then aren't sure where things go when you put it back together. A digital camera makes it easier to keep track of where things go and where certain parts belong. On top of that, if you run into a problem, you could always come here and posts some pictures to aid in diagnosing your issue. Plus the pictures could come in handy in the end if you should want to document all the work you did on your car in the form of a story, or display.

HI 97, and thank you :D. Yeah,one of the guys I am working with on this, my lead tech essentially, hehe which he gets a kick out of, snapped off a bunch before we began removing things.

We are pretty far into tear down, getting hung up on these little fuel lines that hook up just under the valve covers. Lead Tech says they are for recycling unburnt fuel back to the intake. Whatever they are for, they are a pain to remove, they are wanting to strip rather than turn, even tho there is no visable corrosion on them. Penetrating oil also does not seem to be doing the trick. Worst comes to worst we can cut them, but hopefully they will come out after some more encouragement :D

Hey everybody,

I guess I'm the "lead tech" on this car. Just wanted to say hello.

The cars in decent shape and needs a bit of work but well worth restoration. A little bit of pine sap eat right through the hood, probably could use it as a strainer now, :grinyes: . The engine bay is pretty dirty, got a bit of oil every were and i cant tell were is started from. Most of this project will to be getting the car back on the road and drivable. Since we are in the engine already were going to do a head gasket replacement and a valve job. I understand that something is wrong with one of the valves or the seats and stated he's burning oil. We'll have to replace almost all the hoses and vacuum lines. They are all rotten. We are going to remove the smog system (no inspections in SC!) to add a little bit of power. We are going to keep the original manifold and the carb.

I've recommended that we get another engine to build, cause he really wants a supercharger, :evillol: . He wants to be able to drive from gas station to gas station.

Any insight to this project or recommendations are welcome.
