The first photo was taken outside the workshop of Fraser Cars (where the race car is... I know I'll take some pics once it's finished)

This is the engine bay (it has a Duratec 2.5 V6 much like a Cougar)

I kept expecting to see a pic of Mal from next door sulking in the background, but you managed to miss his work shop out altogether.

I have to say I like the look of the new Mondeo, and the handling, and the 500% improvement in build quality over the old model.
All they need now is some real power.

So you know Mal from Bygone Autos? That place is like a treasure cave. There's a 427 Shelby Cobra being assembled there (I've seen the big block) and all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff.

I didn't put their workshop in shot as there are two partial hulks of Rover P5's being slowly cannibalised out front.

You're right about the additional hp - it would be nice but then it would be much more expensive. And I have had too many certification of motor vehicle velocity to do anything more than click the cruise @ 108 clicks down the motorway these days. I prefer a quickish, well handling tourer these days - esp when I start commuting over the bridge soon.

I used to be able to say I could have a ride in the racecar but you'll see why I can't when the car is unveiled @ the Boost Mobile.

Iv been a member of Club Lotus for about 5 years now, and Mal is an active member.
Mal has done some work on my old Triumph, and the look on his and Mark Parson's face after I clocked up some 57sec laps at Taupo is something I will never forget. Mal was especialy impressed with the sound it made. (but then he had done some of the exhasut work)
(he was also most helpful in finding me a diff for the lynx)

I havnt seen the work shop in quite some time however, I was last there when the P5 was a bare shell sitting in the corner waiting for seem welding and other strengthning. Since then I hear it has progressed steadily, and is almost race ready.
I did see the other P5 he prepared at Targa Bambina, and it was looking very good, they certianly do a lot of development work beyond what Rover ever did. (fitting a Nissan rear end for starters.)

He's a very handy person to know, and is always happy to help anyone in need.

That's the thing about car enthusiasts they are usually keen to help out folk who are interested in the same things (mind you a lot of skiers are in the same league too).

It's handy to know folk - when I had a problem with abnormal rotor wear on the previous car I went thru' folk I knew from motorsport and got some alternative parts (much cheaper than the OEM versions and better in my opinion too), plenty of advice and even got to use other folks gear to do the work.

Oh and it's a small world - I was chatting to someone re the Louis Vuitton Cup on a forum for AC2002 (the office overlooks the harbor) and I spoke to someone who is in Sydney who used to live up the road.

Spooky.

And in a round about way you find you end up knowing most people in the sport.
And since the sport is relativly small in NZ, and done largely at an amature level its amazing who you can find yourself talking to during service stops on a rally, in a workshop, in the pits at a track day, or at an after event function. And I have never had a problem finding at least one person in common who the other person knows, even if you have only just meet them.

Nice car! How much did it cost?

Very nice! I bet the ladies just swarm to you with that one, eh? :D

You have the exact same stereo head unit my mom has in her car, the 6-disc in dash changer...

I think that's neat how you can flip around the Ford badge on the grill, and I presume there is a good release there? It's kinda like old Crown Vic's and stuff did with the trunks, you could flip around the badge and reveal the keyhole....

Thanks for the comments.

In answer to the questions:

The Mondeo ST retails in NZD 47,500 that's about Stg14,250 or about USD22,325. I didn't pay that much for it but it's a ballpark figure.

I meant to explain about the badge on the grille - Heep is as usual very observant. The badge swivels to reveal a keyhole as there isn't an internal release so you can't open the hood without the key.

Other things I meant to note...

There's engine bay bracing between the two suspension towers (ie what some folk often refer to as a 'strut bar') and this is also braced against the firewall.

The wheels are standard as 17 inch on the ST (there is a dealer fit 18 inch option too) and they run Continental Sport Contact 2.

The rear end of the Mondeo Sedan and Liftbacks run a multi-link IRS - but the wagon's (or estates) run a double wishbone design which I think were the first to feature elements of the 'control blade' design.

The NZ Mondeos are assembled in Glenk, Belgium and have a fairly unique specification. The range here consists of 2 litre Mondeo Wagon, Mondeo Sedan, Mondeo Zetec (liftback), Mondeo Zetec Wagon, Mondeo Ghia (liftback) and the 2.5 litre Mondeo ST (liftback).

The Duratec-VE V6 is manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio and is from the same family as the engines in the Taurus, Cougar, Escape and the Jaguar X-Type (although with different capacities and valvetrains).

The ST has what is called a 'RapidSpec' body kit - which consists of a different front and rear bumper, the side-skirts and raised lip spoiler on the end of the liftback deck. This is unique to the range in NZ although the rear lip spoiler is standard on the Ghia model and an option on the Zetec models (which confusingly are powered by the 4 cylinder Duratec-HE not the Zetec-E which powered the 4 cylinder variants in the previous models).
