Few weeks ago my engine had a loss of power on turnpike almost like it was running out of gas. I had been driving maybe 20 minutes. I let it sit for a hour or so and drove fine. Took it to have code read and said loose fuel tank cap. Tightened cap and thought all was well. I had put another cap on a couple years ago. Today was like a sputter at 70mph I had been driving about 90 miles. Put original gas cap on but thought maybe should try other things. Can a fuel filter cause this?

Sounds like a bad fuel filter and/or a band fuel pump. We changed the fuel filter on my 2001 when it had 29000 miles on it and the filter was pretty rough (almost clogged).

First, you should probably change the fuel filter. It doesn't take that long to do and it isn't that expensive. Just make sure you get an assorted size of ford R clips for the fittings. It's located at the right rear of the car (under the right rear door above the rocker panel IIRC).

Thanks will try that.....I had an 77 ford ltd that used to need a filter all the time and it kind of reminds me of how it would act. Sometimes I wished I still had that car in 85 my Grandmother gave it to me with 62K if gas was only a dollar it would be nice to have.
