I own a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 w/ 5.7L V8. Every time I start the engine a HUGE cloud of white smoke billows out of the exhausts. I have no idea what could be causing it. Any thoughts....

Not sure, but white exhaust could be coolant getting into the combustion chambers. Black smoke is oil, right? I get my colors mixed up.

is there a tint of any kind of color to the smoke?

i think that it might be carbon build up in the engine/combustion chamber

white smoke.... or steam? white smke = burning coolant = likely head gasket failure.... blue smoke = burning oil... black smoke = rich micture. Steam = normal.

In response, the 'smoke' is a slightly translucent white, it doesn't smell like burning oil or gas. Coolant in the combustion chamber is possible. Keep the replies coming

Last year I had just about the same problem when I first started my 96 formula. I took it in and had to have the head gasket replaced. The repair guy told me that the reason you see it on start up is that the motor is burning out coolant leak while it is not running. Might not be your problem but I thought it sounded familiar.

White can also be auto trans fluid on A/T with vacuum modulators :2cents:

oh, motherfu*ker. so thats what my smoke was.. i had a 89 formy that i took to get the auto trans rebuilt cuz i blew it.. (twice) and it would smoke some white stuff on start up every time i started it..and i was confused cuz i never lost a lot of oil..or any coolant at all. i figured a small bit of oil causes a lot of smoke.

(the auto trans did lose a lot of trans fluid..which i thought was cuz of a shitty rebuild.)

...

lol :(

Yup, it was being sucked in to the intake manifold.
